Do I need to clean a brand new i5 before applying thermal paste

I've got an i5 6500 and a CoolerMaster EVO 212, and also bought a tube of AS5, not realising that the CPU cooler came with thermal paste...

So I have plenty of thermal paste, but no cleaner.

Reading the AS5 instructions I get the impression that the heatsink needs to be cleaned prior to application.

Is this necessary, or only applicable if needing to remove existing thermal paste?

Solution
Only needs to be cleaned if removing existing thermal paste. Use a dot of thermal paste on top of the CPU the size of a grain of rice. Watch videos on how to install the 212 EVO. Mounting hardware should be the same as the LGA 1150 and 1155 socket.

Thanks for the answer. It is indeed the same as for the LGA 1150 socket.

I did find a youtube video for the installation of the 212, which was rather useful as the installation leaflet left out a fair bit of necessary detail. I used the stock thermal paste, and my learning experience now is that the stuff comes out of the tube rather quickly! Let's say it was a rather big grain of rice. I did not bother spreading it out (realising different theories exist). If temperatures become a problem, I'll redo it using AS5 (isopropanol on order). First boot kept CPU at 26°C so I can't have made a huge mistake...

This is my first full build, and learning as I go. This PC is for my son. I have 4 children so hope to save some money over time building and upgrading myself. I expect there to be troubleshooting ahead, and I'm still a little bit more into the hardware than my children. Hopefully the oldest will surpass me soon...
