Compatibility with MSI Z97 motherboard, 16gb or 32gb?

I upgraded my whole system at the beginning of the year but stupidly ran out of money when it came to the RAM and GPU. I'm now looking to upgrade my RAM to (hopefully) 32gb (from 4 year old 8gb [2x4gb]). However, I've seen some people say that 32gb would not be ideal for a Z97 board.

Would going for 16gb (2x8gb) be my best bet for performance?

Primarily I use the system for Adobe Premiere Pro and 3D After Effects.

Motherboard: MSI Z97 Military Class 4

Thanks!

I'm not a personal fan of MSI motherboards because of their poor quailty control, but now that you have it I'd say stick with it for as long as it runs properly.

This would be a very good kit to get for your system. Fairly low CAS latency, and for a locked CPU 1600Mhz is all you need to have perfectly good performance:

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $159.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Any Z97 board is perfectly capable of running 32GB of RAM.

For performance 16GB is enough for most people, but if you're seriously using After Effects and Premiere Pro (large renders) then 32GB will be of great use to you.

If you can tell us your exact CPU and motherboard model we can recommend a good RAM kit in both 16GB and 32GB for you to consider.

Thanks! I originally had a different MSI board but it was replaced with a "like for like" after it started smoking upon startup, so that should have been a clear sign to just get a refund and go for a different brand. Thanks again for your advice.
