Better CPU or GPU

Solution

I would recommend upgrading your GPU (Only if you are really struggling with your gaming). Also, yes it would be better if you are gaming in 1080p or more.
Also make sure your card supports Directx 12. Cz most of the games will stress out your card more than CPU (well there are rare cases when the games stress out CPU). Bt as of now, you are more than fine with 6300..
the 6300 and 960 are not bad pair. a newer cpu would get you a few more fps. if i was you i hold off till the rig you have now fails then upgrade unless most games are unplayable. if they are i wait till the newer pascal gpu drop in 2016 then build a newer rig.

i believe there is no way a 6300 beats a i5 in anything work or gaming related

also given their track record i dont think zen will approach an i5 either

Even in multi threaded stuff, the i5 dominates the FX6300...

Because we are saying about upgrading to an i5? No one mentioned performance per dollar, simply that upgrading to an i5 would give better performance. You said "you can upgrade to a i5 but you'll lose the muti core benefits", which is what I am argueing with, because its wrong.

Yes I do realise that AMD made good CPUs once, I owned them (K6, K6-2, athlon, athlon 64 etc). Ive been using and building PCs since the 8086, and other (non x86) pcs prior.

The short answer is Intel has better performance no question. But at my local microcenter I can get a brand new fx 6300 and a new board for about 90 bucks. I'd be at what 200+ for a comparable Intel setup.

Now granted the Intel performs better, but for my 100 I can go up another step on the gpu most likely, so it can be argued that for most situations the amd cpu is good enough.

This isn't even remotely accurate. Must be trolling.

We are almost in 2016 so that is completely irrelevant and just the hopes and dreams of the AMD faithful, continued trolling won't end well for you.

We're not talking about the entire AMD range or the i7. You stated if the OP upgraded to an i5 from their FX6300 that they'd "lose multi core benefits. multitasking is less efficient and mutithread application runs slower."

That's just not even remotely accurate, the i5 blows away the FX6300 no matter how multi-threaded the application. I don't know why you are comparing the two, but your claim is patently false. An i5 would be a huge upgrade in every aspect and especially for gaming.

@Theee11,

#1: What is your upgrade budget?

#2: When are you looking to upgrade?

#3: Where in the world do you live? and what website to you prefer to purchase PC parts from?

#4: Name a handful of the games that you're currently playing, what resolution and FPS you're seeking.

#5: Please list your full PC specs together: cpu, memory, storage, gpu, PSU (mfg and model)

* Please, no more quotes, if you wouldn't mind. It just makes the thread so verbose that people's eyes just glaze over most of the relevant information.

If you want to save money and get little bit slower graphics or if you want to spend $ and get a faster computer but really there is no difference I have laptop with amd gpu and the same laptop with a Intel cpu and I could not tell a difference In preference but the Intel made the battery last longer olany 30 seconds

Dont judge something that aint here yet. And coming to i5, dont push it too hard though. I was using i5 (still using it in my office workstation). And I really doubt your opinion. "i believe there is no way a 6300 beats a i5 in anything work or gaming related". Woek related also, my pc is far better that office workstation (yes, and i ended up coding more on my pc than on my workstation). Yes there as apects wehre intel shine, bt before juding something completely just by reading online forums and benchmark, do abenchmark yourself. Trust me the numbers are a lot diffrent.. ;)
