Hello, I recently purchased G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) SDRAM DDR3 1866 memory from newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231611) and I attempted to follow several guides to optimize my CPU and RAM in BIOS to get my memory running at 1866 Mhz. After altering several options I attempted to save and restart, but my screen went black and did not show anything even after restarting several times. I ended up having to reset BIOS completely by taking out the battery from the motherboard. Now I am back to default settings and memory still running at 1333 Mhz.

This is the guide I followed the first time: http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=11742. I followed the "FX or A Series CPU" Method 2. I set DRAM Frequency to 1866 (9.33 x 2), DRAM timings to 10-11-10-30, DRAM voltage to 1.50V. I don't really know what to do with CPU-NB Voltage, the command timings, trfc speeds, or CPU host frequency if anything.

To get started my specs are below:

Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 (Manual: http://download.gigabyte.asia/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-970a-d3_v.3.x_e.pdf)
AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor 3.3GHz
AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB
G.SKILL Sniper 16GB DDR3 1866
Samsung 850 EVO SSD

I am not too computer literate, but I know my way around basic stuff so I need help from you guys, the experts! Based on my specs can anyone tell me the settings I should be altering in BIOS to get my CPU and memory working as they should? I don't want to go through resetting my BIOS again or causing any damage when I don't know exactly what I am doing. Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I have the RAM running at 1866Mhz by changing DRAM Frequency to 1866 (9.33 x 2), DRAM timings 10-11-10-30, and DRAM voltage to 1.5V. I did not touch any of the other voltages. I did the first time which may have cause the stability issues. Is there a way to tell if you computer is stable now that I have made these changes? Also do you guys think I need to make any other changes in BIOS(Command timings, trfc speed, cpu host frequency, etc.)?

I was having similar stability issues recently when I purchased a 32GB 1600MHz (4 x 8GB) kit from Corsair for my AM3/Phenom II motherboard. On the FAQ & Support link on the page for my particular kit (under Corsair Memory Compatibility with AMD Platform):

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeancer-low-profile-32gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cml32gx3m4a1600c10b

If you are able to find what I'm talking about, you'll notice the graph that shows how fast your RAM can run depending on the RAM size and CPU you are using. Where you fall on that graph shows that the max you can run that kit is 1600MHz. If you were to add another of the same kit to run it quad channel, you would have to drop the speed down to 1333MHz. I had to drop my 1600MHz kit down to 1066MHz to get it stable. After I did that it passed 6 hours of Memtest86+ with no errors. It's a possibility you could get it to run at 1866MHz, but you'll definitely have to adjust the appropriate voltages. I have not gotten mine stable at ANYTHING except 1066 MHz. So far I can't even underclock it to 800MHz or 1000MHz and get it stable. I am kind of new at all of this, so I'm still trying...but I would suggest for you to set the multiplier to get it to 1600MHz and leave the timings on "Auto" and see if that runs stable. You can use CPU-Z to get the SPD for that speed and make sure the "Auto" timings match.

Good luck!

Thanks, I did run Memtest86 last night for 8 hours 30 mins with 2 passes and 0 errors, but didn't know if that is the best way to check stability. My other concern is how to tell if my voltages are set optimally because in Bios it is flashing a red message saying "CPU Voltages are not optimized" after I set DRAM frequency to 1866. Is this normal?

Thanks for your answer. I have a AMD FX processor so after looking at the chart here: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/support/faqs/memory under "Corair Memory Compatibility with AMD Platform" it says my processor can handle 1866 with 2 sticks which is my current setup so all should be good! Just need to get everything optimized now.

I set the EOCP to 1866, but is that all that you suggest changing and leave the rest at default?

Thank you very much. Just one more question. Is it normal for BIOS to be flashing a red message saying "System Voltage not optimized" in the M.I.T. menu? When I change the EOCP to 1866 this message starts flashing. I tried changing the CPU voltage to 1.50V because that is what my memory is specced but the message/warning stays.

I just did some research and it turns out the flashing message is just Gigabyte motherboard basically letting you know that the memory speeds/voltages is not set to default incase the change was not intended. Sounds like it pops up if you OC anything so no worries. Thanks again for your help, everything seems to be running smoothly!
