Hello everyone!

I've built my own PC before, but that was a long time ago when I was a teenager. Since then I haven't followed any gaming or hardware trends. In the past year I have gotten pretty deep into Dota 2, and this christmas I want to build a PC for it.
The #1 objective of this build is to drive Dota 2 at max settings for a stable 120+ FPS, to take advantage of the 144Hz BenQ monitor that I will be getting with it. Now, Dota 2 is a very specific game when it comes to graphics, especially now with the new Source 2 engine. So I am not sure if a good CPU is key, or a good GPU. I need someone with an understanding of the new engine to help me with this.

My build:

  • MB: MSI Z170I
CPU: Intel Core i3-6100T Skylake, 3.20Ghz
GPU: MSI GTX 950 GAMING 2G
    RAM: 8GB 2133mhz
    + SSD Kingston drive
I am considering upgrading to MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G, as I have seen some videos on Youtube where Dota 2 (Source 1, however) could go down to around 70 FPS in teamfights on GTX 950. But again, that was Source 1. Anyone with experience in this are, let me know how to adjust my build to best fit my purposes, I will be eternally grateful.

as DOTA2 is a moba it relies far more on single core processing power than anything else, the system that you put togeather I believe will run Dota2 at a pretty stable 120+ FPS I know you are going to hate me for saying this but I play league of legends on an I5-6600k so another Skylake processor and I get over 300+fps at all times! in the video you saw the person may have been running off the FX-8350 which performs poorly in games that require a good single core clock speed :)

What kind of budget do you have? A Z170 board is not needed, for an i3, and that should be the non T version. Going with the regular 6100, and a B150 board, would allow you to spend more of your budget towards graphics. Depending on area, it might even be similar in cost, if not cheaper, to go with a Haswell i5 setup.
