Hey guys so I'm looking to upgrade my PC's CPU and motherboard as the CPU is bottlenecking my fps on the game Dota 2. (the only game I play)

I have a 144hz acer monitor and a modern graphics card I bought recently to take advantage of the new Freesync thingymabop but still only hitting 40(during teamfights) to 80-90(idle) fps in-game.

My current specs are-

650w Corsair PSU

AMD Radeon R9 380 graphics card

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Processor 3.20GHz

8gb ram and running 64bit Win10

And the monitor is the Acer XG270HU 27inch WQHD TN Free-Sync 144Hz Gaming Monitor

I'm not looking to spend too much money, just something that will get me to at least a stable-ish 120 fps in Dota 2. I should also mention I've been told Dota 2 is very CPU intensive and I think this is proven when I tried lowering the graphics in-game and received no change in fps.

I'd love some suggestions from you guys and Christmas is coming up so this will be my present to myself!:D

I'm from Australia by the way in case any Aussies in this sub has seen any specials/deals lately.. ;)

I'd say my budget is around $500AU. Will that even be enough? :(

Overlimit, so you are going to make a nice smiley to some sponsor.
I believe you have a decent DDR3 already, also you can try to sell out those parts so you might save some money this way.

What motherboard do you have? Do you have a good CPU cooler?

If your board and cooler can handle it you should get an 8320E and overclock it to 4.5 GHz — or whatever 8 core FX chip you can get for around $100 bucks. If your board can't handle an 8 core FX then you might consider a system upgrade.

I actually already have the CPU cooler you mentioned. Bought it a few months ago and put it on my 5 year old CPU. I could just purchase the CPU and motherboard you mentioned and just switch the cooler off the old one onto the new one I'd buy?
