Last week I replaced my wd blue 500GB -which I was running everything off of- with an ssd and a wd black. I then bought an hdd enclosure to turn the old wd blue into an external hdd. When I plug it in and turn it on I get this error message: http://tinyurl.com/n6qquof. The Blue still has all the old data including Windows on it, was I supposed to delete that in order for it to work on my new installation of Windows?

Solution
The enclosure might be faulty, not getting enough power, or have a bad USB cable.

Try attaching the drive to a USB 2.0 port if you have one available, and also use a different USB cable if you have one. After that open up Disk Management and see if the external drive is showing up for you.

Some external drive enclosures use proprietary hardware that requires a drive to be re-formatted before interfacing with the enclosure.

This also means that after formatting a drive in the enclosure that you won't be able to take it out and install it internally anywhere without another re-format, as it is dependant on the external drive's proprietary hardware to function.

I'd honestly look into getting a different external drive bay like this that doesn't require any of that nonsense: http://www.amazon.com/Anker%C2%AE-External-Docking-Station-Support/dp/B005UA3I72

So you're saying, if this is one of those eclosures that has proprietary hardware, the only way to get it to work is connect the harddrive internally first so I can format it and then it should work with the enclosure? Also, how do I know if the enclosure I bought uses said proprietary hardware?

You would need to format the drive while within the external enclosure for it to work properly.

You know if you have an enclosure that uses proprietary hardware when you install an already formatted drive (like you have) and it still requires a re-format before use.

How do I format the drive while in the external enclosure when it's not even recognized by my computer?
