Self build all works but is it connected right?

Built W10 skylake PC, corsair cx500M PSU. Should I be connecting the 960GTX with the 8 pin psu socket (labelled 4 + 4 CPU) or keep linked to the 6 pin PSU slot (labelled 6 + 2 PCI). I say linked because that 6 + 2 slot is a 6 pin to 3 molex cable powering the rear fans in the node 304 case, I've linked the 960 GTX via 2 molex to 6 pin adapter. I read that molex is an older standard and my gut feel is I should be using the 8 pin PSU (4 + 4 CPU) slot to 6 pin on the GPU.

Solution

yes, the 8-pin to single 6-pin cable you can use that

the slot should be marked 6+2 pcie & 4 +4 cpu ( stupid to name it that )

the CPU adapter should go into the CPU power socket on the motherboard, in addition to the 24 pin adapter. The 6+2 pin adapter for PCI will go into the GPU. IIRC, they don't even fit in each other anyway.

Thanks for replying, the CPU is already connected with a non modular cable from.the PSU. The question is can I use an 8 pin PSU (labeled 4+4 psu) connection to 6 pin pci on the 960 gtx?

the 4+4 goes to the motherboard

you need to connect both of these circled in the image

also dont use molex adapters

you have the proper pcie cable, you need to use the 6+2 slot specifically for the gpu

you need to redo the connections before you blow something up

Mb connected like that already with fixed cables from the psu. The 6 + 2 is connected to the graphics card but it is 6 pin to molex then molex to 6 pin adapter to graphics. I can't see a 6 pin to 6 pin pcie on line. There is a 4 + 4 CPU output on the PSU and I have a 8 pin to 6 pin pcie cable, can I connect directly to the card using the 4 + 4 psu output instead of the molex workaround?

Thanks for sticking with this, connected as above like this last night, all good. I thought a semi modular psu would cut down on the cable clutter but from the side of the psu you have pictured I have the sata cable, molex for the front case fans and now the pcie to the 960 gtx. The rear case fan is into the motherboard header controlled by the bios. I thought about using a splitter for all three fans through the 1 motherboard header but I hear that's too much for one header. I could use a female sata adapter to molex for the front fans, this would negate the large molex cables strip that came with the psu. is this a good idea? Would be on the same sata "strip" as the SSD and HDD.
