Hey All,

I have my older hp pavilion that I put in a "ASUS HD6670 graphics card with DirectX®11, HDMI, and Eyefinity support" https://www.asus.com/us/Graphics-Cards/EAH6670DIS1GD5/overview/

to power my dual asus VE278Q monitors: https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/VE278Q/

I am now about to put together my new system, but am holding off on buying new video card, because want to get an r9 390 to power dual 4k displays, but don't have the cash for the displays and video card yet.

Question:

My new system is using i7-4790k intel processer with Intel® HD Graphics 4600 on board, and SUS Z97-A/USB 3.1 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard

Should I install my older GPU to drive monitors, or use new system on-board graphics? I am not gaming, but love high quality visual, etc.

Thanks!

If youre not gaming, no need to install your AMD card...the integrated graphics of your CPU will be fine (as the ASUS z97A has onboard video out IIRC).

I am curious, why'd you'd have an enthusiast class CPU and no desire to game. Workstation?

Neither your 6670 and 4790K integrated graphics will display 4k resolution.

With Skylake now available, there is absolutely no question in my mind that a new build should be Skylake.
a. Prices for cpu, z170 motherboard and ddr4 ram are almost precisely the same.
b. i7-6700K has an estimated 5-10% performance improvement per clock over haswell.
c. 14nm runs cooler, you get a decent overclock without the need for exotic cooling.
d. The Z170 chipset permits the use of much faster ssd devices on the horizon. Samsung 950 pro for example:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/ssd950pro/overview.html

A Z170 chipset has the ability to display 4k resolution.
And, it is stronger than a 6670.
Look for one with a displayport output.

If you ever want fast action gaming, you will need a strong discrete graphics card.

Thanks for the notes guys, I am an enthusiast on his first build, productivity machine, so seems like a bit of overkill, but having fun with it, and have gotten great deals on parts, $750 for solid machine. I will be getting a discrete card, most likely a r9 390
