Just built a new system with the ASUS z97-a 3.1 and i7 4790k. PSU is evga supernova G2 750w. All components are new. After putting everything together, it doesn't post. No diagnostic beep(s), no video, and the mb led's flash red between the vga, cpu, and dram led's. No noticeable pattern there, and none of them stay lit. I pulled the gpu and drives, still no post. I pulled the ram (crucial ballistix sport ddr3 1600 8gb x 2) and tested each stick in each slot. No post. If I pull both ram sticks, it will give me the "no/bad memory" post error (one long, two short beeps). The 8pin atx power is connected and verified seated. The cpu fan is completely seated and operational. I used the jumper included with the psu to verify it is operational (does the same as the paperclip test). I examined the cpu socket for bent pins and don't see anything. At this point, it has to be the cpu or the mb, right? Unfortunately, I don't have access to another socket 1150 mb or cpu to test with. BTW, the board shows a factory bios of 2105, so it should already support the haswell refresh cpus.

The only thing I haven't done yet that I can think of is to see take a multimeter and see if I can verify that voltage is live on the 8pin atx connector.

Any other ideas?

edit: forgot to add, I cleared the cmos, too, not that it should matter straight out of the box.

Your motherboard could be faulty, it could be all sorts of errors. What do you think is likely the cause, or did you see any mechanical damage on any of the components?
