Hello All! I just got Windows 8.1 tonight and I'm trying to install it on my new computer I just built. I get to the part where it starts installing and about 5 seconds after that it comes up with "Windows could not format a partition on disk 1. The error occurred while preparing the computer's system volume. Error code: 0x8004242C." I know this code means " The volume size is too small." (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd208031.aspx) If it helps I have the Gigabyte Z97x Gaming 3 motherboard and I'm trying to install to a Kingston SSD with a DVD install. It says it has a 109GB partiton for system. If I try to install windows without making any partitions it doesn't work. Any ideas will be appreciated! Thanks!

When I let it try it gives me the same error code. Yes an SSD. I have the SSD and the CD-ROM drive connected. To delete the partitions I tried clicking delete and used Shift+F10 and did diskpart then clean.

No, not diskpart. Not needed.
Directly in the Windows installer. It gives you the option to delete ALL partitions.

I didn't see the Delete all button so I deleted them individually. Now it says "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files." I don't know if it means anything but it says the name is "Drive 1 Unallocated Space."

Right...there isn't a Delete ALL
Where are you seeing this - "Drive 1 Unallocated Space." ?
This is in the Windows installer?

If so...Create a partition using that whole space.

Making the partition worked and now it says "Drive 1 Partition 1" When I click next it still says the same thing.

Before clicking Next, did you select/highlight that new partition?

Yes

So...there is a single partition, of the whole space of the drive?

Suggest you restart the process.
Power off, boot from your install media, see what happens

I've done that already but I'll give it another shot!

I am back to where I was with the same "We couldn't create a new partition or locate..."

No, it doesn't make a difference. A drive is a drive.
