Hey,

I have a couple of questions about the components mentioned in the title and also general knowledge about buying parts in the US.

I'm from Europe so I don't have experience with shopping in the US, but my parents will be there for a week or so and I have the opportunity to buy components cheaper (For example, a build with i7 gtx970 is $500 more expensive here).

I plan on making a PC mostly for gaming, but I also model in 3dsmax and zbrush.
So, with those two in mind, which configuration is better, an i7 with a gtx970 or an i5 with a gtx980?
I made two lists on this site so I can see the price:
-i7/970: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/YvHyhM
-i5/980: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/hnBTGX
(I'm getting the case from here, too big to fly with it. NZXT Phantom 530. Good, right?)

And now, for the other part of my questions;
Will there be big Christmas discounts or should I not worry about them? and also, where can I buy parts cheap?

Edit: Will the i5 bottleneck the 980?

Solution
With your programs I'd go the i7/970 build. That's a good case, as far as prices they will often change on a daily basis and have sales going on - a good place to shop in the States is NewEgg.com - while others can beat them on individually priced items, overall they generally have the best prices year round and always have a variety of sales - links to the last two days:

From my experience 3D programs especially games depend more on the graphics card. The i5 during games should not bottleneck the gtx980 but in a 3D program where it needs the CPU to also help render it may be a little slower but I do not think it should be that bad unless you're doing some AAA 3D modeling

I know this may be a rather ambiguous question but how big would the fps improvement be on the i5/980 compared to the i7/970?
Not necessarily in number of fps but maybe a percentage

Hmm, from what I've read, the only difference comes when playing over 1080p. But since I still don't have a new monitor and it only goes to 1680x1050, I think the i7 build is better. And eventually I'll get a new gpu in 2-3 years.
Thanks everyone, made my choice :)

Thank you :)

Is there anything I should do to finish this thread?
I mean, there isn't really a solution to it, just information that helped me decide so...

while the gtx 980 is more powerful the price tag on it is not sensible at all. for just 100$ more than one 980 you can get 2 970s. price/performance ratio is important thats why ppl recommend you the quad core skylake over the 6-core. in the same way 970 beat 980
