Cascading Router? What?

Hi,

I searched and searched on Google, but none of the solutions solve mine. So please, don't shoot off my head, okay?

Okay. Let's start. First off, let's list off some configs. I have a MASTER router set in the living room. This MASTER router is a TP-Link Archer C2 (AC750), and I didn't change anything other than the wireless SSID and the password. That means...

Master Gateway - 192.168.0.1
Master Subnet - 255.255.255.0

Now, I have a stupid, ugly, white router supplied from my ISP (this is the SLAVE router from now on). It sucks, but I need it. Because in the study room, I have a server. I prefer the server staying in the study room, so.. I grabbed a 10 meter ethernet cable and somehow managed to tape it to the ceiling, so nobody would notice it. Now one end of the ethernet cable is connected to the MASTER router, while the other is dangling in the study room.

I followed a guide, where it asked me to set the SLAVE router's gateway to 192.168.0.2. Then it asked me to turn off DHCP at the SLAVE router. Then it asked me to connect it to the ethernet cable, strung inside the study room. But, the guide specifically told me to connect the ethernet cable to the LAN port. Huh?

So now the config on the SLAVE router is...

Slave Gateway - 192.168.0.2

Okay, so maybe I'm a idiot, but I just did what the guide asked me to. Big mistake. The moment I connected the server to the SLAVE, it told me it couldn't connect to the internet. Umm, maybe it has something to do with the ethernet cable connected to the LAN port? So, I tried LAN, WAN, but none of them works. Stupid.

Now what should I do?

Can I get a copy of the guide you used?
Also when it tells you to connect via the LAN port you should plug a Ethernet cable into ports 1-4 and not modem. Also the dhcp server should be disabled on the slave router and the ip address of the slave router should be at the end of the range preferably ie 192.168.0.254 this way it stays far from your DHCP pool. To fix this issue either reset the the slave router by holding the reset button or static set your ip address and then connect to the routers management interface.

Hi, McNeal,

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/network-wifi/how-set-up-router-as-repeater-3494655/
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/33700-42-ultimate-modem-router-setup-thread

These are the two guides I used. I was using the first one, didn't work, looked for more detailed instructions, and found the second guide by accident.

And, yes, I used ports 1-4. I know the difference between LAN and WAN, I was just curious if I could connect to the internet through the LAN.

The SLAVE router's IP is well away from the MASTER DHCP pool - it starts from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199.

And yes, I did disable DHCP on the SLAVE router. It's written on the first post of this thread.

Did you try totally resetting the second router? I know my D-Link router had some issues with the address not updating properly. That lead to many hours of frustration.

Um.. the first guide mentions resetting the router completely. So..

EDIT: I found this really weird behavior. After connecting to the SLAVE, I never get my DHCP IP address from the MASTER. It's like the MASTER treats the SLAVE as one device and refuses to let the computers connected to the SLAVE grab an IP address from the pool.

In my router I have a DHCP forwarding client. Without this option enabled or if your router is in bridge mode without virtual interfaces configured it wont reply to dhcp. try setting a static address while connected to the slave router and ping the master router. If you are successful its just a dhcp issue.

Hi, McNeal

I tried connecting to MASTER via SLAVE. It works flawlessly. Internet now works. So I was flabbergasted.

Then I tried going back to automatic DHCP in Windows settings. Total flop. Nothing works. Can't connect to SLAVE or MASTER admin pages, can't connect to the internet..

Then I set the IP to 192.168.0.23 and set the default gateway to 192.168.0.1. Big success.

I'm going to disable Wi-Fi on this SLAVE though, I can't ask every guest to set static IPs without bugging them off.

EDIT: Seems like my SLAVE router doesn't support DHCP forwarding. Total hogwash. What a bunch of ISP loaded crap.

Is there a way to make the SLAVE forward DHCP requests?
