I bought a new hard drive that was previously used as a back up drive on a Mac. When I went to install windows 8 from the installation dvd, I received the message about the disk being gpt and Epi and format of the desk. The option to format the drive the windows installation process was greyed out.

How can I get this drive formatted? I do not have a working Windows machine

Another question. This is a hybrid drive, so how does the drive know which information to store on the SSD portion.

Thank you!

In the Windows install routine, when it asks 'where', go to Custom.
You should see whatever partitions exist on that.
One by one, Delete.

1. In the install routine, delete all existing partitions, leaving one large space.
Format that, and then let the OS install.

2. The drive firmware does all that. Over time, it learns which individual files are used the most, and those end up on the small SSD space.
It does it automatically.
