Hi guys,

A few months ago I did my first build, details can be viewed here: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/kfBPxr

So there was a sweet deal on a 250gb Samsung Evo SSD at Frys. It was like $63. Anyway, I'd been meaning to upgrade from the Kingston because everybody was saying how I'd regret buying it and it's going to slow down and so on. I figured, hey I need an SSD for my Laptop anyway since the hard drives are crazy slow on that thing. Additionally, everyone says it's basically plug and pay and should only take me a few minutes.

Last night I used the included Samsung software(Migration) to clone my C drive and when it was done it simply said, "Turn off your computer and install drive." I went to sleep and came out this morning and did just that. I took out my Kingston and and plugged in the Samsung. I turn on the power and some brief screen pops up that looks to be info about my recently added PCI-E 4 Slot Sata Expansion that I plugged my Blu-Ray drive into, then it goes to the ASUS loading screen then goes to a page that says:

Windows Failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, then click next.
3. Click "Repair your computer"
If you don't have this disc contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

So I put my windows install disc and it says,

"Press any key to boot from disk or CD"

I click any key and it goes to the ASUS "In Search of Incredible" and then eventually starts loading the Windows Disc.

I select my language as English(US) click next.

I get the option to install windows or repair. I select repair. I click Troubleshoot and then "Refresh your PC." After a few moments I get the message: "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again." Thanks a lot windows, I have no idea how to do that...

Ok, so I'm thinking, screw it, I'll just "Reset the PC"... What do you know... "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."

My C(OS - Kingston) didn't have any partitions. So I go through every other single simple option on the windows disc menu, and nothing can do anything.

I tried going into the BIOS and arranging the boot priority but the drive won't even show up on that list in the main Bios Screen. It only shows my 2TB HD and my newly added Blu-Ray. When I click Boot Menu, it shows a list of every drive connected but I can't do anything with them. If I click the Samsung, it takes me back into the original loop of "Windows Failed to start..."

All I want to know is, what did I do wrong? How can I try again and avoid this issue? My Kingston is still fine, I put it back in for now so I can continue to game during my weekend. I'm going to format the Samsung and try again, but first I want to know how can I do this right? Also, I'm probably going to keep the Kingston in my desktop now. My refurb laptop didn't come with a windows disc so if I screw up the OS I'm stuck paying $100 for another copy. So maybe I'll keep the Kingston for a couple games or something. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate some advice on how to correctly clone this drive so I can have the easy plug and play experience everybody mentioned.

Solution
Assuming the Kingston still has everything on it...(does it still boot from that drive?)

Redo the whole clone thing.

Disconnect ALL other drives except the original Kingston and the new Samsung.
Redo the clone thing.

Right. I recently used the Samsung Data Migration, going from a Kingston HyperX 3k 120GB SSD to a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB....worked just fine.
Quick and easy.

However...if it had failed...I was prepared to just do a whole reinstall.

I'm definitely going to give it another shot today with all the other drives disconnected. But I have a question. Could the issue be that I installed the data migration software onto the C drive that I was cloning? It had told me to close all programs on the drive. Maybe I should try it with the software installed in my storage hd?

No. Makes no difference.
I did it specifically with the Samsung tool installed on the existing C drive.
