Would 2 cores be fast and work fine if all im doing is browsing youtube. netflix, and paying my bills?

Im wondering if I would need 4 cores or if I can just get by with 2. Because there will also be softwares and stuff running at the same time.

I would definitely recommend having 4 cores instead of 2 cores.

This is because having only 2 cores will mean your computer won't be able to handle as much stuff as more powerful computers can, which means having 4 cores would be a better choice, especially considering what you are trying to do.

For Netflix, browsing, and Youtube? An Intel Atom can run those programs. A Qualcomm Snapdragon can run those programs. You don't need 4 cores for that. At all.

One core is enough for those tasks.

It's worth noting though that Netflix (and other video streaming services) run on ARM processors like a Qualcomm Snapdragon because they decode the video stream in hardware. On general purpose computing platforms like the PC, the Hollywood studios raised a stink - they were afraid people would capture the stream to make a copy of the movie. So on the PC the streams are decoded in software in an encrypted virtual machine, usually running in Flash or Silverlight. There is no hardware assist, so they require a much heftier CPU than on dedicated platforms like an XBox or Roku or your phone.

So previous gen Atom processors and Celeron/Pentium CPUs from about Sandy Bridge or older couldn't effectively decode 1080p streams in software. The newer CPUs all can, but it's just something to watch out for if you're working with old or used hardware. You'll probably run into the same issue if you try to decode 4k Netflix streams on the PC with lower-end CPUs.

It's a good idea to get something with H.265 hardware decoding if you don't have a GPU capable of that — if you're looking at a very low-end CPU. H.265 is more demanding than H.264 and if 4K streaming starts happening with it some CPUs will struggle.

As said by most people here, a duel core processor is enough for what you need. The G3258 is a decent two core processor at an affordable price and would suit all of your needs you have stated here. If you open a lot of programs you may get lag with a duel core, just make sure you have enough memory and you will be fine.

I used to have a laptop with an Intel Celeron, 1MB L3 Cache, 2.2Ghz and only one core, I was pretty much fine although all I did was watch youtube video and use the internet, if you're going to be streaming HD videos on Netflix however then look a little higher although my celeron did me well.
