I think I killed all of my HDDs

I transferred 2 old hard drives out of an old machine. I powered them using a 3 way split SATA power cable with my SSD and they both appear to have died. I noticed the 3 way cable does not plug into the SATA socket on my power supply but the PCI-E 6P socket. Is this what has blown my drives?

I suspect thats what did it alright. You see the pcie 6pin has no 5v lines, only 12v and ground so it could not possibly be used for sata power.

Given that you applied 12v to the 5v input on the drive... does that mean the you can replace the controller board or is the whole drive dead?

I'm not sure. I think the drives are dead. I read something about removing the burnt out capacitors and they may work again, any truth to this or am I clutching at straws?

Applying 12v to the 5v inputs on a drive tends to burn out the heads as well.

It's strange that my power supply came with this odd cable in the first place! Oh well, time to upgrade my drives. Thanks for the info everyone.
