Hi i have a gigabite 660 oc and i can get a Sapphire hd 7950 dual x for 20 bucks from a friend( he bought a 980..)
I can afford a 960 but the 7950 is close to the 960? worth the money of the 960 having a 7950 dual x??

My specs fx 6300 4.0ghz
8gb 1800
660 oc 2gb

Solution
Oh you can run a 960 no question. But if you can get a good working 7950 for 20 bucks, get that and save your money. After all it's close in performance.

Another scenario. Get the 7950, use the money saved to get an i5 and a board, then when you get it, sell the fx6300 and board you have now along with the gtx 660 on ebay. You should make enough to recoup most of your cash spent and have a system that will throw down.

Im taking as reference the tom`s hierarchy chart and other post that i read here talking about the 7950(r280) compared with the 960 and that stuff.
Thats why i ask if they are close on performance.

The r9 280 is actually a rebadged 7950 boost if memory serves. So it should be in line with the 960. Also it supports dx12 and has a 384 bit bus vs the 960's 128 width bus, as well as 3gb of ram vs 2gb on the 960. Not that the 960 is a bad card, but if you get the 7950 and a little overclock it should do ok. I bought my 7950 used for 120 or so on ebay, running it stock and think it's a fine card, no reason to upgrade yet.

i saw some old benchmarks and the 7950 seems close to the 660 but now is superior. Better drivers? share drivers with the r9 line no? so new drivers= performance improved?¿

Like I said if memory serves, the r9 280 is literally the same card as the 7950, just clocked a little higher.

As far as vs the 660, they are still supporting with drivers, the 7950 that is. Also the other thingis that the 7950 physically has more hardware, ie wider memory bus and more ram. So as the cards age perhaps games are just taking advantage of that extra hardware.

But in fact I think the whole 7000 series family is getting the new drivers for dx12. My cards still gets driver updates now. So there you go.

Then is no potential upgrade to a 960 no?

No reason why you can't run a 960, it has much lower power consumption and is just newer all round.

Thats what i think, they are close on performance and is not worth waste 180 euros more to buy a 960 having a 7950 with oc.
i know is not the best option considering im playing star citizen.. but is a cheap deal and mucho improvement from my 660 oc

Seeing as how it's now possible to OC Intel's non K CPU's Zen is going to have to be absolutely amazeballs.

Let's see if those claims have any basis in reality before jumping to any conclusions, eh?
