My newly purchased MSI GTX980 TI 6G runs EXTREMELY bad in my main PC. I tried loads of stuff and have no idea how to continue from here out. The performance issue occurs the moment you boot the PC. It never goes away.

When I say bad, I really mean 0.1 FPS in a 10 year old game. It runs so extremely bad that playing a tiny video in the web browser even gives mouse lag and stuttering video. Please help...

Specs:

  • 3770 Ivy Bridge
    Asus Maximus Extreme V
    32GB RAM 4*8 1333mhz Corsair XMS 3
    Corsair AX850, 2.5 years old, 220v
    Drivers tried 359.06, 355.98, 358.87, 353-something
    4 mechanical hds, 2 in raid 1, 1 ssd
5 or so 120mm case fans, cooling is not the problem.
    Windows 7
1 2560x1440 res monitor used during testing
    Other specs in pics below.

Things tried:

Does it work in another PC? -> Yes card works perfectly fine in another PC, so the card is ok.

Issue with the computer, software or power supply? -> I am upgrading from a 780 TI which takes about the same amount of power. That card works absolutely perfect. The computer as a whole never has any power issues. The PSU is a Corsair AX 850 gold standard... The 780 has no apparent issues with any software or settings I am running.

Drivers? -> Tried 4 different Nvidia drivers, all are exactly the same problem. The 780 card works perfectly fine with any driver version I install.

Driver clean up? -> Ran a driver cleaner program, and reinstalled. Exactly the same problem.

Bios, overclocked, etc? -> Stock settings, nothing has been overclocked.

I am totally at loss here. This was a very expensive card and it is entirely useless right now... Below are pictures go GPU Z. Note how the power consumption and clock speeds are consistently high even during idle, while in my second PC they drop down correctly. This may give a clue (of what I don't know).

Hi thanks.
I will try the bios update next time around though am a bit afraid of that. The last bios update is from 2013 which is from before a 980 TI anyway I believe, so I doubt the MB sees much difference between a 780 TI and a 980 TI in terms of handling it.

The PCI speed was set to Auto first, then I forced it to 3.0. Have not tried 2.0 yet but that would not be optimal long term? I will try it for a test though.
The 780 worked (and still works) absolutely perfect, so I doubt the MB would have an issue in its hardware.
