Hi. I was recently making a guide on pcpartpicker, but I got this compatibility message "Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs."

Just making sure, would I have to update BIOS with the AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor CPU and Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P ATX AM3+/AM3 Motherboard?

Also would this motherboard be good for overclocking, and how would I update BIOS if I absolutely had to?

Sorry, I'm a tech noob and I'm trying to improve my knowledge of computers. Thanks in advance.

The warning will always be there, but I wouldn't worry about it if buying a new motherboard. On the other hand the GA-970A-D3P is not a good choice for the FX-8350; you should instead get the GA-970A-UD3P (8+2 phase VRM) which only is $10 more on Newegg.com.

I have a question, what is the significance of AM3 or AM3+, and ATX and micro ATX? Do these matter? Also do all motherboards come with decent sound?

Well for the decent sound question, the answer is yes: most motherboards come with decent sound, and some even come with high quality sound. Look for "audiophile quality" labels in the ads, or "high quality audio" or something like that.

Some of the better realtek sound chips actually are quite good. The real issue is making sure that the cable going to the front headphone port is fairly clear so it doesn't pick up background noise or distortion from all the sounds or signals going around inside the case.

One trick that a lot of people don't know is to plug headphones into the speaker jack on the back of the case for improved audio quality. Or if you're a serious audiophile, you can always get an external USB DAC (digital to analog converter) which is basically an external sound card.

I have a Fiio E-10 myself and while it's sometimes glitchy on Windows 10 (works fine on 7) it's got great sound, and the built in amplifier is nice. That said, most onboard audio's more than good enough nowadays. It's almost wasteful nowadays to get an external sound card. 99% of people probably can't even tell the difference. The headphones/speakers you choose will make a bigger difference.
