VERY high CPU temps

I just did my own build (3 days ago) I have not been monitoring things as closely as i should have, the PC has been running fine, i don't see any issues with any programs, no shutting down, etc... but earlier this morning i was thinking of overclocking my processor, and when i brought up HWMonitor i had a horrible thing waiting for me, it is showing my idle temps with the CPU as 75-90 (Celcius of course) WAY to high for what it should be.

Build :

Case: Corsair SPEC-02 Redshift (2 intake fans, 1 exhaust fan)
MOBO: ASRock FM2A88X Killer
CPU: A10 5800k 3.8 mhz
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L9A Low Profile Cooler for AMD
RAM: Kingston HyperX 2400mhz 8gig (2x 4gig)
Graphics: Asus GTX 970 Turbo
PSU: Cooler Master 80+ bronze (do not remember model number)

Every monitor i've looked at (Core Temp, HWMonitor) are all showing a single "package" with a single temperature, instead of individually cores, I am not sure why that is either, and if perhaps i am reading into this wrong? But it seems that a resting temp of 75-90 is quite high, unless its combining all cores for some strange reason...

When i applied the thermal paste i used a "pea sized dollop" as everywhere i read instructed to do so, then attached the Cooler (using the backplate that came with it). The Computer SEEMS to run extremely quiet and (i thought) cool, but obviously thats not the case! My GPU is running around 30 C so no issues there, just this processor.

Anyone who could help me out that would be awesome, i am at a loss for understanding this one :O

Below is a picture from HWMonitor that shows the current temps (the max is just from startup, haven't done anything intensive)

That is the problem i am having, no issues whatsoever when the computer is running, but the monitors are telling me these super high temperatures, which just don't seem right, everything inside feels cool as a cucumber as well. I'm wondering if the temperature i am SUPPOSED to be looking at is the CPUTIN? the temperatures do go up and down with load, but they are a more reasonable number compared to the 90+ readings i am getting from the "Package" part.

On a restart, when i go into bios immediately after, the temp is sitting at 40 C, which is what prompted me to make this thread, thinking i'm not understanding something correctly with the monitoring software.

did you remove the protective film on the cpu cooler before pressing it on the IHS. The base comes covered with a vinyl cover to eliminate any scarring to the contact plate.

Yep! removed the cover before I installed it.

If it is indeed the software, should i just be looking at the CPUTIN value? From what i can gather that is the socket, not the processor itself yes? But the temperatures should be fairly close (within 1-2 C of each other)? I was considering overclocking, but i can't do so if i can't find a good monitor to fight stable temps :/

You have a cooling solution problem somewhere. Voltage, parts, software etc. Surprised the thing didn't shut down or throttle badly. This covers a LOT of bases. 90 C will turn your processor into burnt toast fast!

I'm really leaning towards its not actually a heat issue and more of monitoring issue. I can open the case right now and touch the heatsink, its not hot at all, i downloaded AMD Overdrive (figured AMDs product may have a better time displaying temps) it SEEMS to be showing that my temperatures are in the 27-30 C range idle, 35-40 range while playing a game right now. But i've had the computer on for about 6 hours now playing games and running tests here and there and i haven't seen a single issue associated with overheating. So i guess i will just have to be VERY careful while overclocking and i'm going to have to trust AMD's Overdrive. If someone can confirm that the Package Temp displayed is indeed a heating issue and i'm just not able to detect it, please let me know so i don't ruin my machine! haha

Thank you all for the help, and thank whoever else can help!

35 to 40 C is really good.
You are doing well.

a bit of follow up! I am u sing AMD Overdrive to monitor right now, and it is showing very normal temperatures, it shows the "Thermal Margin" as in, the amount of degrees you can go up before being "too hot" Despite HWMonitor showing me 100 C + temps, i am seeing a thermal margin of 23-27 WHILE playing a game and using 60-70% of each core! So the problem seems to have been in the software. Thank you for all the help, i am now succesfully overclocked to 4.4ghz (maybe i'll go higher if i can find voltages) and everything is running great!
