Hey,

Before I begin I would like to thank this community for the help I've been able to get by being a longtime lurker.

I created this account today because I feel the need to ask a question for the first time.

This was my first build. I'm a casual gamer and don't expect the absolute best results but I have been completely underwhelmed by the performance I'm experiencing.

Current setup:
Intel Core i5 4590 @ 3.30GHz
Sapphire r9 290x Tri-Force w/ 4gb VRAM
RAM: HyperX FURY 2x8GB
MOBO: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition
Samsung EVO 500gb SSD
PSU: Corsair AX 760w

The problems first started when I tried to play Total War: Rome II. Now I understand that this game was poorly optimized and paired especially bad with my GPU. But when I went to run the in game benchmark test I was pushing around 20 fps.

I then tried 2 other benchmarks via MSI Kombuster and CINEBENCH R15.0

Kombuster gave me 80 fps which I was happy with, however, CINEBENCH gave me an OpenGL score of 34.96 fps with a CPU score of 121....

Upon comparing those scores with the scores of other machines (either both the same CPU/GPU or same GPU) I noticed that I was achieving far far lower results.

So my question is.... What the heck is going on? Did I make a mistake with the parts I picked? Installation went smoothly but are there any missteps or things to optimize so I can get performance bumps? Do I have a bottleneck?

Thanks for the help. I apologize for the long entry but it's really frustrating to drop this much money, be really excited about the build, and then be completely underwhelmed by the result.

I would guess that something went wrong with your installation. Your very low CPU benchmark could be a symptom of overheating. Something is definitely not working as it should-it could be a physical hardware issue or a driver/software problem. I would first check that your CPU cooler is properly mounted and actually cooling your CPU.

Thanks for the response.

Calculagator... When I run CINEBENCH and check the temp of my CPU via Speccy the temperature goes from the AVG 32C to 35C so I don't believe it's that. I've also run multiple memory tests via mdsched and it doesn't show any failures.

Do multiple displays hurt?

I've got some pictures of my CPU/RAM/MOBO/GPU/Storage from Speccy analysis if that will help.

Multiple displays don't hurt. You should be getting a cinebench score of at least 400 regardless of your GPU or displays.
Your CPU temps are unreasonably low for a cpu benchmark. Unless you have a pretty extreme setup, your cpu should heat up when it is being stressed. Perhaps your CPU is somehow not using all of its cores. It is possible to disable cores; your benchmark score would be consistent with only a single core being active.

Speccy should be able to show how many cores are active and at what speed they are running. I would check that to see if it matches stock.

Your CPU performance could also be hurt by a rogue program or driver tying it up.

Ok

Since I last updated I have looked into my CPU's cores.

According to Speccy and Resource Monitor all 4 of my i5 4590 cores are operating but not at 100% capacity. I thought to myself AHA! they are parked. So I unparked them via Coder Bag but unfortunately the performance via Cinebench hasn't moved a bit.

Calculagator... in reference to your question about my cooling setup... no, I do not have an extreme cooling system, everything is stock. I am surprised as well that the temperatures are so low. They stay low even after I unparked them which was even more surprising.

Should I try messing with display/resolution setting? Reinstalling drivers? Idk where else to look

Thanks for the continued help Calc!

Are you sure that Cinebench is set to use at least 4 threads? Perhaps you could run the passmark benchmark suite. It's not great, but it should allow you to compare the performance of various aspects of your computer to similar hardware. I am especially interested in the single threaded CPU vs overall CPU benchmark. It could also show if you have a memory, disk, or GPU issue.

I am starting with the CPU because a malfunctioning CPU will keep your GPU from performing as it ought.

You might try resetting your bios to default values in case there is something off there.

You have the latest bios? Is "Version A.6" from "2015-08-17"

All motherboard drivers are the latest? Gpu too?

Ram is running at rated specs? Can look with cpu-z (freeware) ->memory tab.

Maybe try the next tool to look at temps, voltages and what more for sensor data,

Download hwinfo32,

http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html

You can open hwinfo32,after that open the sensor window by checking sensors only=V,
after that click run
I think it's the best software tool for this.
If you just click run instead of checking sensors only you'll get two windows, the top one is the system summary,in this one will you current bios be shown.
For sensors you can look at the main window at the left top and click it there too.
Run only one sensor tool at a time.

OK. Got caught up with work etc...

So I ran hwinfo and am looking at A LOT of numbers. What exactly should I be looking for?

My current BIOS is v10.4 released on 4/15/15... Looking at MSI website it looks as if 10.6 was released so I'm going to trying DL that and hope it helps.

Calculagator... I ran Passmark Benchmark Suite. I couldn't find the analysis of my chip for a single core but I did find the average analysis via http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html. I'm going to run it again so I can relay the exact numbers. But how do I find the single core within the benchmark suite?

Thanks a lot guys for the effort. I do appreciate it.

That's fine it's your thread. ;)

Just what you we're looking for already, check temps and voltages (there's a little diagram that explains between what values they can be,too big jumps or drops aren't good even within atx specs).

Hope so too.

You should be looking for odd temps or any cpu settings that don't actually match your CPU.
For Passmark, look at all of the benchmarks and then compare them with a baseline with the same CPU and/or GPU. Post anywhere where the numbers look significantly different.
