Part of the RAM is no longer detected in BIOS, after Windows 10 upgrade

Hi there,

I recently upgraded my laptop (Toshiba Satellite U840W) from Windows 7 Professional to Windows 10 Pro, using the upgrade feature. The laptop comes with 6,144 (2,048 onboard + 4,096) MB of RAM from the factory.

The day after I noticed that the system was not only slower, but made some programs crash because of low memory. Thus I checked and I found that my pc no longer has 6 GB of RAM, but only 2. Even in the BIOS I only see 2.

I am inclined to think that the issue started only after the upgrade to Windows 10, because the pc seemed fine before (months ago I remember seeing that it had 6 GB of RAM).

I found that my laptop is not officially supported for Windows 10 by Toshiba. However I'm having trouble going back to Windows 7, because a Microsoft technician made me install Windows 10 from scratch to try and solve the issue, so I cannot go back. Plus I'm having trouble with the original Windows 7 key because Windows want me to contact Toshiba instead of just downloading Windows 7 from Microsoft's site.

So long story short, is it possible that this problem is caused by Windows 10? I find it strange that even in the BIOS I only see 2 GB (and yes I tried to upgrade the BIOS, it's already the latest version). Could using a different OS (Win 7, or even Linux) solve this issue or is it a hardware malfunction?

I appreciate any help I can get,
thank you

Francesco

1| As an owner of Toshiba's hardware they are bound to serve you - harshly spoken though I'm sure they will understand what you've gone through so by all means contact them.
2| You can install Windows 7 if you have the licence key and in this instance any ISO of Windows 7 Professional will do. You can also go ahead and install Ubuntu as well.
3| You can get back to Windows 7 and see if the issue is resolved though I think the ram issue will be due to the fact that your system was configured to run with a ramdisk as there seems to be only one slot for your ram and as far as I know there aren't ram sticks smaller than SO-DIMMS.

Have you ever been through your BIOS prior to the upgrade to Windows 7 and verified that there was...

Have you ever been through your BIOS prior to the upgrade to Windows 7 and verified that there was 6GB of physical memory on your laptop? I'm not second guessing you just that this wouldn't be persistent even after a re-installation.
