Hello everybody!
I'm trying to connect an old samsung ide drive (manufactured at 2005) to my laptop (HP, windows 7), i have all the connections right and i'm even able to see the drive icon on my computer. when i try to enter the drive the explorer crushes and ask me to format the hard drive. i want to get some photos from the drive, so formatting it, it's not an option.
What can i do?
Thank you all

Unfortunately, clicking sounds are a pretty bad omen when it comes to HDDs in most cases. If the drive has been physically damaged, the best (and safest) bet would be a data recovery company.
As for the jumper settings, I'm afraid that the only option you have, in order for you to set the jumper properly, is to try and find the user's manual of that drive and see how you should set it.
Hey there, Edi.

Perhaps the partitions might be corrupted or the drive itself might have issues.
Would you please post a screenshot of what you see about the HDD in Disk Management (you can use imgur.com to upload the image)? Here's how to open it: How to access Disk Management in Windows to manage hard drives.
I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different computer, to see if the issue reoccurs. If you're still unable to backup the data, you could try to access the HDD via Ubuntu Live USB/DVD, to see if it's properly recognized and if you can get to your files. Another option you could try, is data recovery software - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html and http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm. And last, but not least, the most reliable solution of all - a data recovery company.

I hope you're able to retrieve the data you need from that hard drive. Please let me know how everything goes.

First of all, thank you for your answer. but sadly it's not working...
i've tried all the methods but it seems like he can't read the data on the drive.
maybe my cables are broken or maybe the jumpers location is wrong.
i'm trying but nothing happens.
by the way - the hard drive makes weird clicking sounds...
