Installed a GTX 970, but it's not being detected/drivers aren't working

I currently use an ASUS A88X -Pro motherboard which has a built-in AMD Radeon GPU. I bought and installed a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 card, plugged in everything, uninstalled the AMD Drivers, and now I'm having difficulty installing the proper drivers for my new card. Wherever I check, it states I'm running the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter rather than the 970. I tried getting the proper drivers from Nvidia, but the installer states that there's no compatible hardware for it. I also tried the drivers from Gigabyte, but that didn't work either.

The VGA is plugged into the motherboard, as I didn't possess a VGA to DVI adapter, but I assumed it wouldn't matter much. Also, I changed the video setting to "Force x16" for the PCIe slot, but that didn't change anything either.
So now I'm at an impasse as for what to do, any and all tips would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

So let's say I purchase an adapter and plug it in. After that, it'll recognize the 970 as the GPU to use, correct?

To be honest, ive never installed a gpu without having a monitor hooked up to it so I cant guarantee that is why it is not being detected. That is my best guess though.

However, I can say with 100% certainty that you will need to plug the monitor into the gpu in order to use it. So either way, you will need an adapter.
