I have a current build that can play most games on ultra and high preset. Being Christmas is coming up i wanted to do a few upgrades. I have a budget of around $150 USD. My GTX 760 has a overheating issue and is being replaced as i get the go ahead from Nvidia, so i was thinking that my friends wants it for $150 so i get a new in box one and sell it to him, then buy a GTX 970 with the $300. But sometime next year i am going to buy a GTX 980ti. My current specs. (I play 1440p 60Hz)

i5 4690k @ 4.2ghz (Hyper 612)
MSI Z97s-Sli Plus
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8gb DDR3 2400mhz
GTX 760 2gb Reference
3tb Seagate Barracuda 7200 Rpm
EVGA Nex750G

I've got a MSI Gaming 980ti and it's an awesome card, keep in mind though that when you go to buy one that they currently retail at almost $700 and even in a years time I cant see that falling any more than $100 most likely $50. If you can afford that in the next year then I would skip buying the GTX 970 altogether. There's no reason to spend $300 if you're only going to resell it 6 months later and lose 30% of its value. Save up for better components altogether. If you really want to upgrade something now, I notice that you don't have an SSD. If you hate loading screens in games and slow Windows starting times there's no better solution than a good SSD.

You can get a 500gb Samsung 850 EVO for less than $150 right now. Or if you want to just try SSD a Kingston V300 120gb for only $48 just about anywhere.

Well the only reason i am not looking at AMD at the moment is the R9 390x a $400-450 card is trading blows with the GTX 970 a $350 card. Also i dont like the slow ram and clock speeds of the card. I was looking into getting a 500gb or 256gb SSD. But if i go with a SSD i can get the 980ti like you mentioned above. (I just seen the MSI GTX 980 for $519 and it comes with a 256gb Adata Premier sp550)
