Hi everyone,

This is my first time here so my apologies in advance if I break any golden rules. I know I at least got this to the right forum. 7 years ago I built a computer with my brother who was more tech savvy than me. I'm trying to do it myself this time.

So here's my build I've currently priced:

1. 467.99 Graphics Card 980 GTX Nvidia
2. 44.79 Thermaltake Versa H35 Window Mid tower
3. 226.99 MSI Computer ATX DDR4 3000 LGA 2011-3 Computer Motherboards X99A SLI PLUS
4. 22.38 Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan (RR-212E-20PK-R2)
5. 419.95 Intel Core i7-3770 Quad-Core Processor 3.4 GHz 4 Core LGA 1155 - BX80637I73770
6. 108.99 Kingston HyperX FURY Black 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 2133MHz DDR4 Non-ECC CL14 DIMM Desktop Memory (HX421C14FBK2/16)
7. 77.89 Samsung 850 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E250B/AM)
8. 69.00 WD Black 1TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD1003FZEX
9. 97.97 Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64 Bit System Builder OEM | PC Disc
10. 89.99 Rosewill ATX 12V 750-Watt 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Power Supply Hive-750
11. ??.?? Some kind of Blueray/DVD/CD combo for utility/installing windows (about $80?)

Is this a good build?

This is the pre-built machine from Asus I'm also looking at -

The prices at the end of the day are going to be about a wash, but I noticed that the power supply for the Asus machine I was looking into was only 500W which doesn't seem like it would be enough if I ever wanted to buy another GTX 980 down the road to use SLI. Have things changed here? Would 500W be enough? I remember 1000W being a bit over, but the tip I got at the time from my brother was "better over than under if you want to upgrade at some point."

So my thoughts...

Pros of building my own machine: Better quality (don't laugh, my previously built machine still works 7 years later... hasn't crashed once), More room to upgrade.

Cons: The Asus machine is pretty damn close on price, it'll have a bigger hard drive unless I want to add multiples and I'm a little worried I'll get in over my head doing this alone.

Any advice guys? Sorry for the long read.

Solution
Nope, that's socket 1151. Where it says LGA 1151, thats the socket. The CPU you picked needs LGA 1155 and those only accept DDR3 RAM, not DDR4.

Hi Buddy,

regarding your question about the PSU my attitude is the bigger the better. I have assembled many PC's myself and have never been able to recycle PSU's and I have always upgraded the wattage. The reason being I never know if I am going to upgrade components in the future. I also have a friend who after building a new PC walked away from windows entirely in favour of Macs as his windows machines kept Blue-screening. It wasnt until some months later that I realized the cheapskate was trying to recycle a crappy old 250watt psu hence the bsod.

Bite the bullet and get excess power rather than starve your machine.

Best Wishes:)
