Motherboard/ hard drive issues

We were trying to replace to the motherboard and graphics card for my husband's computer, and everything appears to be connected properly, but when trying to install Windows 8 I get the "no device drivers" message. From a little bit of research it looks like the hard drive is not connected properly. On the BIOS menu it says the total system memory is 8000mb, but his hard drive is 1TB, so I took this as further proof that the motherboard isn't recognizing the hard drive. I have tried connecting the hard drive to different SATA ports. I tried reading in the manual about the formatting? in the BIOS menu, as many people mentioned doing in other forum threads, but I have no idea what I was doing in there and couldn't find anything that was helpful.

The motherboard Crosshair V Formula Z, the same as he was using before. We had to replace it because we were getting an FF error code on the previous motherboard.

Does anybody have any ideas of what to try next? Does this sound like an issue with the hard drive itself? Or any dumbed down explanation of how to use the BIOS menu if you think that is my problem? Thank you!

Hey there again, Melissa Anne!

Since you have your laptop, I'd suggest you to try updating the mobo's drivers from the manufacturer's website by creating a USB drive or a CD with the latest versions of the SATA controller and chipset drivers. You should also be able to find some instructions either in the manual or the website on how to Update (Flash) your BIOS.

Good luck!

Welcome to the TH community, Melissa!

Have you tried updating the SATA controller drivers from the motherboard's website? I'd recommend you to refer to it or the mobo's manual on how to flash BIOS and upgrade the firmware (in case it's not already). Another thing you should try is resetting it using one of these methods: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS
This will get your BIOS settings back to factory defaults, so you'd need to reconfigure them afterwards.

If you have access to another computer, I'd suggest you try the HDD there and test it in Windows using a brand-specific HDD diagnostic tool from the manufacturer. If can't find it, you can refer to this thread for some third-party tool suggestions: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
If the other computer is not an option, you should try running a DOS version of such a diagnostic utility and troubleshoot without booting into any OS.

Hope this helps. :)

It`s all down to the interface mode you have selected in your bios.

When a device cannot be found.
Or in your case when you get to the point of where windows 8 asks you where, or what hard drive you wish to install it to.

If no hard drives are shown in the selection window of devices to install windows to.

It is because in the bios of the motherboard where the 1Tb drive will be listed.
The wrong Sata interface mode is selected Melissa.

The Interface mode it`s self for the drive is likely set to Sata.

The way to avoid the error while trying to install windows 8, is in the bios set the interface mode to AHCI mode.
Save the changes in the bios before you exit it.

When you install windows 8 from the Dvd disk, and you get to the point where it asks you what drive you wish to install windows to, it should show up in the main drive selection box.

After the change made in the bios for the Sata devices controller setting it to AHCI mode.

If Sata interface, is Set to Sata mode in the bios.

When you get to the same window where it asks you to select a hard drive to install windows 8 to.
To the left is an option to add a driver.

What you need to do is find the provided motherboard cd/ dvd disk for the Crosshair V Formula Z.

You insert the disk, and browse the disk for the Sata drivers and click on the driver file within the folder.
Once the driver has loaded the main window of the windows 8 install and setup, it will refresh showing your 1Tb based Sata drive Melissa.

Swap the motherboard driver Cd/Dvd, in the dvd drive back to the windows 8 install and setup disk again.

Format the 1Tb drive with the advanced drive options listed to the bottom right.

Then simply click next to begin the install, and setup of windows 8

These are the two ways to get the drive to show in windows install and setup.
The latter set of instructions is if you wish to leave the Sata controller interface mode set to Sata in your bios.

The loading of the Sata driver from the motherboards driver cd/dvd must be performed before any drive is shown in the main selection window where you are asked what drive you wish to install windows to.

By pre loading the sata driver provided on the Crosshair V Formula Z motherboard driver disk.
The error of "no device drivers" found is prevented during the windows 8 setup and install.

From the BIOS menu, the sata ports were already set to AHCI. I installed all of the drivers I could find on the disk (drivers/chipset/install/Win7_8/packages/drivers/SBDrv/SB7xx/AHCI/W864a; also AHCI_svr/W864a). Also under SBDrv there are options for IOV, NB, RAID, USB, and SMBus. that I did not do anything with. Still getting the same message. I tried restarting the computer as well after all this in case that was necessary and got a warning saying " the current bios setting do not fully support the boot device" and entered the BIOS setup to change the CSM settings to enable the boot device per what was recommended in the manual. I haven't been able to test the HDD on another computer as the only other computer we have is my laptop. Am i going to the right place to find the drivers?
