Hi,

Today I took out my 680 GTX to replace it with a 980 Ti. I made sure both power connectors were secure before powering on. Everything was working fine, I updated the drivers and checked the temperatures and it was idling around 50c with no load. I started playing Dota 2 and about 15mins into the game the whole PC powered off.

Now I cannot power on the PC at all. My first response was to try removing the graphics card, assuming it was drawing too much power. When that still didnt power, I tried disconnecting all cables from the back except the power, and all devices, leaving just cpu ram and power to mobo. Still no result.

I have an NZXT Kraken closed unit cooling on the CPU, It has an LED with the logo on the cpu. When I turn the PSU to 1 to power the system, standby lights on the mobo come on, and when I press the power button the LED on the water cooler flashes once then stays off. The system doesnt turn on and none of the fans start rotating.

I am unsure at this point whether something has happened to the motherboard or to the PSU. I currently have a 750w Cooler Master bronze PSU, I believed this was enough to cover a 980 Ti. I am leaning towards suspecting it is the PSU that has gone somehow. I read the stickied thread on this board about "read this if you have no POST issues etc,". One of the suggestions in the thread links to a corsair video where they have a method for testing the PSU with a paperclip connecting the green and a black socket in the large connector for the motherboard, and having 1 fan connected. I tried this, following all the steps, and the fan did not start spinning. Is this enough evidence to tell me that the PSU has died or is it only a semi-reliable test?

I also tried taking the motherboard out of the PC and resting it on some card next to the case, with the cpu and ram still installed and the minimum in terms of necessary power cables and the power switch to the case, encase the motherboard was being shorted on the case somehow. I didnt think that this should be the problem since my PC was running fine for a short while after I had installed the new 980 Ti card and I hadnt made any changes to the motherboard.

Is the best next step here to just purchase a new PSU ?

Solution
PSU looks to be the culprit, as it was not a quality unit to begin with. Pick up an Evga B2/G2/GS series, XFX, Seasonic, or Antec, 750w+. The B2 750 tends to be priced really well, with the G2 isn't all that much more.

What would have caused the PSU to die when it has been running fine with my 680 GTX and the same setup for 2 years now.

Thanks for the recommendations for new PSU's. Is the 750w enough for the 980 ti ?

The GTX 980ti uses more power, than the 680, and being a poor quality PSU, it probably wasn't outputting its advertised power. I made the bad decision to use a 650w one, and it died powering an old Phenom II X4 8xx and an HD 4870. A quality 750w is enough for a single 980ti.
