Hello,

I have desktop internal hard disk WD 80GB.

I observed all of sudden hard disk not responding. When rebooted it took long time and does not detect that hard disk. After some time if i keep my Desktop OFF say 2-3 hrs and starts the hard disk detected and works for some time.

One thing I observed, some mechanical noise like spindle stop working and hard disk stop response.

What could be the issue?

Thank You

Hi there sachinm,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
I would agree with smorizio and say that the first thing you need to do is to just back up the data stored on the drive.
After that, you can attach the drive with different cables(both SATA and power ones) to a different SATA port. That way, you will see if this is a connection related issue.
In case the issue persists, you can test the drive with both short and extended DLG tests. The results should show you the overall health status of the drive.

WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=3TC2fq

Let us know how this goes,

Hello,

I got the strange analysis.

This is my configuration.

Motherboard : D945GCNL - with latest bios v36
WD HDD 1 : WDC_WD800AAJS-60B4A0
WD HDD 2 : WDC WD800BD-22MRA1
Kingston SSD 3 : KINGSTON SV300S37A120G ATA Device (120 GB, SATA-III)
DVD WR : LG

All are connected through sata cable on all 4 slot.

When I keep DVD + HDD 2 then it runs fine and no issue.
When I keep DVD + HDD 2 + HDD 1 then some time it works and HDD 1 stop working
When I keep DVD + HDD 1 + HDD 2 + SSD then always HDD 2 stop working or not detected.

There is no jumper setting on both WD drives.

Spinwrite given good status of both WD drive.

The issue is with only HDD 2 which stop working in between when all drive connected but when individually configured then works fine.

Please suggest the solution.

Thank You

Every single one of the drives has separate power and SATA cable right?(not daisy chain)
If this is the case, I guess you can measure the temps of both your system and HDDs. You can do that with some third power tool. Are the HDDs next to one another? Try to change ports.(SSD to be in between let's say)
This could be caused by a PSU related problem. Yet, you need to rule out the other options.

Thanks,

Yes each hdd has separate Sata cable but power supply is one by two. This means, actual power supply for sata is 3 .. and taken Y cable for two output. so 2 are direct power supply and another two is using Y cable.

Actually i when I installed SSD 5 month ago I struggled lot having same issue. Some how I could manage to start 2 hdd / 1 ssd / 1 dvd by testing /swapping power supply & Sata port. It ran perfectly for 4-5 months. Suddenly HDD 2 giving issue by stopping in between. Initially i thought HDD 2 is having issue. But when ran single HDD with DVD .. it worked fine. Again with HDD 1 & HDD 2 .. after some HDD 1 gave the problem.

Bit confused what exact issue behind.

Are the two HDDs attached with separate power cables? In case they are not, you can try that. In case you've tired that, I guess you need to troubleshoot your PSU. Unfortunately, the easiest way to do so is to just borrow one from somebody, install it on your system and see if the issue persists.

Thanks,

But I need to borrow and will take some time. Surely I will update once I test using your suggestion.
