Hi,
I have useless netbook, and wanna give away for auntie, just for learning how to use pc. Need some internet browsing, music, movies and other simply tasks. I have few questions, what os is lightest and gets good performance? Also needs light software set: browser, antivirus, and etc. Netbook is here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Inspiron-Mini-1018-Netbook.36739.0.html I'm thinking about ram, and ssd upgrade, but I think it's not worth it....
Thank you.

I'd go with Linux mint. It will be nothing like windows but a teenie bit like a mac. It is a very slimmed down os, I've heard of people using a half gig ram playing music and on Firefox. It's open source so it's free, but finding and installing programs is a pain (mainly older Linux systems,i Haven't used mint yet) but with Google and copy/paste almost anyone can figure things out.

Also, if the ram slot can be easily accessed(usually in dell's if there's no back opening they're under the keyboard) go for it. 2 gb sticks are cheap, around 40 US dollars. And for the SSD, they are around the same price for a 120 GB drive, which should be plenty.

This is a fantastic video. The first 4 minutes is all you...
The thing about light browser is... the problem are the websites that demands more and more stuff from your browser. Recently I too looked for a light browser and I couldn't come up with a satisfactory one that will load modern web pages, the ones that are able to, BAM! wants 1G ram on the first page (tab) I want to load. The two that required less memory and basically can only load text-based webpages and that's is. If you are limited to text webpages, you throw that dang laptop to the trash.

If the student finds this laptop too unresponsive to use, s/he will get discouraged rather quickly, never mind trying to figure out what's what.

This is a fantastic video. The first 4 minutes is all you really need to watch. If you feel comfortable doing it, I'd say go for it

Thanks for answers. Windows 7 very laggy for this netbook, I don't wanna waste money for ssd and ram. I now it's cheap, but for people who use, if it's even use this netbook, it's real money wasting. Better save and buy new budget notebook.... I'll try linux mint...
