I am using a new system with some older memory. Asus M5A99FX PRO R 2.0 with a FX 6300 at (oc) 3.8ghz. The old memory in there is Ballistic 2gb x 4 @ 1600mhz, CL=10, Would I notice much difference if I went to upgraded memory? Say 4gb x 2 1866mhz @ CL8, or 2400mhz @ CL11? I can speed up different aspects on the MB, but will the cost be worth it on this business/cad system? I did just put the processor in, and don't plan on upgrading that. Thank you, LT

The MC is the Memory Controller, the FX CPUs have a native MC of 1333 per their BIOS and Kernel Programming Guide, they like to 'say' the FX CPUs can run up to 1866 at one stick per channel or 4 sticks at 1600 which is rather deceptive in of itself as all that testing was done with 4GB sticks
You will notice a difference with faster RAM DEPENDING on what you do. IF you do stuff that is really RAM intensive you will see a difference. If you don't then you won't see as much of a difference. Also putting 2400 MHZ Ram in that board may not work since it is only rated to 2133 BUT you can try. If all else fails you just run it at 2133. I know My motherboard only goes to 2000 MHZ and i tried to use 2400 but couldn't get it there being stable. Only 2133.

Thank you drtweak, I was just reading the MB manual that was written on 1/13. Even though thy have some 2400mhz vendors on their list, they do say to run it at 2133mhz. Does the CPU support 2133? or does it even matter? 6300 is an old piece also, but appears to run OK here @ turbo 3.8ghz. I do realize that there is only so much I can squeeze out of older systems like this. The appeal is that they are inexpensive, and can run pretty well in my business based PC's. I did put an expensive GPU in here since I already had it, an EVGA GTX780. Guess I am just trying to tweak it all, and stay stable. These days ddr3 is so cheap, I can't help but want to spend a little more if I can see an improvement. I went to SSD's, which really help. I just hate waiting for a computer to do things these days. Instant gratification is expected nowadays, lol.

Thank you gentleman, for your time to answer me. I am looking at three options at Newegg. All gskill. One is 1866 @ 8 @ 1.5v, 2133 @ 9 @ 1.65v, and 2133 @ 1.65v. The latter is $12.00 cheaper. Current memory is 1600mhz @ CL 10, so I am guessing I may get a bump up on 1866mhz @ CL8. This system is not really a multitask as of yet, and I hope to use it to drive a 4K monitor when prices come in line, but I don't expect RAM to be an issue there. I just have to debate whether to spend $50 in hopes for improvement? If it is only a nano-second might not be worth it, but if a split-second, to a second, might be worth it....I have been reading a lot that says memory speed is inconsequential, but I am just not sure, so that's why I go to the experts here :)

And, on this system, since using AutoCAD 2012, I doubt ill go to win 10. I understand neither Autodesk, nor Microsoft will support that platform, so I a guessing no need to go above 8gb on win7 home. Thanks again.

The 1866/8 sound good, (sounds like my favorites - the Trident X) great sticks! As far as memory speed, it all depends on what and how you do things, CAD will see an improvement as metioned above, as well as multi - tasking, that's why I use fast DDRAM and lots of it in all my rigs, got 32GB of 3200 Tri Zs, in my Z170/6600K build I'm playing with now - others are in sig
