Hi all,

First post here - I wanted to thank you as so far this website has been invaluable to me. However, I have come across a problem that I could not find the answer to.

I found a couple threads detailing the "03" North Bridge Initilization code issue with MSI Z97 boards and many suggested to was pertaining to ram. I am reusing ram that was in an older computer - it is DDR3 1600 1.5v ram, but it is older (link here:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231637).

From what I have found researching on here, as long as it's DDR3 1600 and under 1.55v, it should work. I have tried inserting the ram into different slots, I even tried booting it with just one stick of ram, yet I get the same error. I get a "no signal" on my monitor - I tried both DVI/HDMI on both the video card and the mobo and I got nothing.

I confirmed that the GPU is snug, and the processor was correctly installed. Could the ram just not be compatible?

I guess I'd also like to mention that this ram was installed in my old setup that totally quit working due to my motherboard/processor quitting - could it be possible that the ram got toasted along with the motherboard/processor?

I thought I would pick all of your brains for some help - it appears all the issues are pointing toward bad/incompatible ram. It's just annoying that I have to wait another two days before I can get my setup back up and running.

Some suggestions on ram I guess would be good too. My GPU is an R9 390, my processor is a i5-4690k.

Thank you!

~Jason

Yes the CPU fan spins - curious though, if the CPU fan is functional (or not) - why would that indicate a problem with the CPU?

I am at work so I will have to wait until I get home to check.

Are bent pins a defect or was it caused by improper installation? I made sure the processor was nice and snug in the socket before I reinstalled the cover.

I ordered new DDR3 1600 memory (Gskill Ripjaws X) that will arrive Thursday. I will see if that fixes the problem.

If that does not fix it, how do I start the RMA process? Do I go through newegg or the manufacturer themselves?

Thank you.

Well, the new ram didn't fix it. I had a hunch it wouldn't. Took off my CPU and literally inspected every pin with a magnifying glass and could not find a single bent pin. I tried one stick of ram in the DIMM2 slot, 2 sticks of ram in the DIMM2/4 slots, and 0 sticks of ram, and the stupid thing still idles at "03" .....I even tried plugging in my old GTX 770 that I new for a fact was functional.

I saw this thread here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems

I went through the entire checklist. Nothin' .... looks like I will be RMAing the mobo. I will probably try to RMA the processor, too -- maybe they'll let me swap the MSI board with an ASUS one.

What a disappointment....oh well.

Hi all - I actually held off on RMA'ing the processor - I just bought a Gigabyte G1.sniper and had it here for last night. My last 2 boards were Gigabyte and I seem to have better luck with them. Installation was a breeze - did everything the exact same way I did with the MSI board aaanndd---voila! It works! Was up and running in under an hour. Just to be sure, I tried using my old ram and that still works too! Looks like I will be able to recoup some money after all.

This is the first time I've ever gotten a DOA part--it's definitely annoying! Thank you Alexoiu!
