External Caddy Issues - "Format Drive"

Hi!
I have a few 2GB WD hard drives that I occasionally connect to my PC via one of two USB caddies.
I'm finding that some drives work fine in 'Caddy 1' but I get the "This drive needs to be formatted" message when placing the same hard drive into 'Caddy 2'.
Conversely, some disks are fine in 'Caddy 2' but 'Caddy 1' refuses to read them.
Some drives work in both caddies.
I've a feeling that the problem hard drives are only working in the caddy in which they were originally initialised, despite me following an identical initialisation procedure for every hard drive?
Does anybody know how I can get both caddies to read what are definitely healthy hard drives, please?
Hoping the explanation of my problem makes sense.

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, banshee68!

I'm sorry to hear about your formatting issues. It's possible that the enclosures themselves are configured differently requiring you to align the HDDs through formatting. There are many different external bridgeboard and enclosure manufacturers, each with their own command sets, levels of compatibility, and technical issues. I'd recommend you to keep constant backups of the data stored on those drives in more than one location. I'd also suggest you to go through this article from our knowledge base about installing WD drives in third-party enclosures: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=lnwHuv

Hope this was helpful. Good luck!

Many thanks for taking the time to reply, SuperSoph!
(& for understanding, clearly, my rather convoluted explanation of my problem!!!)
Your response sounds like a reasonable explanation. I'm just surprised that such an issue exists.
I'll take heed of your advice... Though it could get messy with lots of external drives in the equation!
Thanks again & very best wishes.
