I accidentally ran my new skylake i5 6600k cpu without any cpu cooler installed for a few minutes. Is it broken?

I built a brand new PC and wanted to test it out and start up my BIOS and see if everything worked but my BIOS said my cpu was reaching temps of 95C and now I'm scared that i hurt my brand new cpu. I only ran it for about 3 minutes. Do you think its busted?

Solution
Possible you warped the lid and voided the warranty. Install the cooler and if it runs hot(if it runs at all) the lids warped and the only fix i know for that is delidding and that runs the chance of completly bricking it.

I dont think so in my opinion, only one way to find out and that is to stick the cooler on and see what happens, I am not sure but as one of the others said, going back some years cpu's would hit a hot cut off temp and switch off, I would think something like that may still happen but I have now idea, as I said, try it, only way to find out.

i am pretty sure the 5th gen cpus had thermal trip , so I cant see them leaving that out for 6th gen cpus

Your CPU is most likely fine, Intel and AMD usually always put a failsafe in the Motherboard, it has a Temp Sensor that reads the CPU temp, thats how you were able to see. Using this it will automatically shut off your computer once it senses that major damage will occur. Again this is in SOME not all, you may even have to enable it in the BIOS, most times it comes enabled by default.

@Wolfshadw Really? I had no idea that could happen so fast. What if the cooler stops briefly and instantly fries your processor? Is that likely to happen? I'm scared now :l

Yes, that can really happen, but I think you missed the part where the OP had not installed the CPU cooler. If you have a heatsink and fan assembly installed and the fan stops, the heat sink will still draw heat away from the processor for a time before the CPU overheats.

The computer buos will protect you and auto shutdown your pc once your processor gets into failure range if you have it enabled. Aswell as cpu fan failure warnings. Also you can hear and tell when your cpu is overheating. If you are worried download a program like core temp and minimize it to the toolbar so you can constantly monitor it. You can even set a auto shutdown when the cpu reaches a specific temp in the program
