Quad channel memory on Z97 sabertooth?

Solution
you wont be going quad channel. you will be going dual channel, two times with four ram modules. z97 only supports dual channel and has 4 slots. it is more efficient to run dual channel a single time like (2x8gb) than dual channel twice like (4x4gb) on a z97 board.

an x99 board for example supports quad channel and has a total of 8 slots, instead of 4 like the z97. so on an x99 you can run 4x4gb in quad efficiently, or 8x2gb less efficiently.

sorry im very confused right now. do you mean i can use 4 sticks on the sabertooth or not?

yep you can use 4, but basically itll only run in dual channel x2. having 4 sticks wont give you any increase in speed over 2 sticks, only storage size increase. it is more efficient to run two larger sticks than four smaller sticks.

hmm this whole time i was under the impression that dual channel meant being able to use 2 sticks and quad channel meant being able to use 4 sticks. i didnt know anything about speed increase or anything like that haha. i guess thats why i didnt understand k1114...

btw, im wanting to go for quad channel for looks. i wanted to buy the 4x4gb corsair dominator platinum one. do you think this is a bad idea?

hmm i see. so i will be taking performance hit by using dual channel with 4 sticks compared to using dual channel with 2 sticks?

what a bummer, the 4x corsair dominator platinum would have looked amazing!

never heard of that. if you really want to fill it, 4x4 will be fine. i was just explaining the differences. wasnt saying it will actually hurt performance. may just run a little hotter and won't give you any performance increase over 2 sticks. any cpu will handle 4x4 fine.

The memory controller is on the cpu so doesn't stress the mobo. Also the little difference does too little to heat you won't even see 1c different. It's not less efficient. Putting more stress on the imc just can make it unstable if you are pushing speeds. It has nothing to do with efficiency or affecting performance.
