Let's say you are building a PC with a 10k$ budget. You picked a good CPU and you have 32 slots left for your SLI GPU configuration. A Titan X is recommended at x16, but can run at x8. You have 2 options: Have 2 Titan X's running at x16, at their fullest potential. Or have 3 Titan X's, with 1 running at x16 and the other 2 at x8. What do you choose?

There have been tests and it's shown that the difference between x16 and x8 isn't that big. If I was doing something that would benefit from 3 titans the I would go ahead and get the 3rd.
If talking about gaming my observation is the games sli support and driver support is going to have a much greater impact than x8 v x16. I have seen benchmarks where going from 2 way to 3 way sli has shown a negative impact in performance and was put down to poor drivers
