I've searched everywhere and no one seems to explain it in my circumstances.
I need to transfer a 113GB folder to my laptop from my pc. Windows easy transfer does not work at all for Windows 8.1

You should be able to network them as long as they are on the router and both on private networks
Just share the drives you want to copy to or from, and look under network in my computer.

make sure both computers are on the same workgroup.
share a folder on the PC, go to permissions, allow everyone access.

on the laptop open a folder window in the address bar go to \\ip address of PC\ shared folder name for example \\192.168.1.125\share

drag and drop the 113 GB of files to the shared folder

wait as long as it takes, it will take a while

Both networks have the router saved under private connection, and both are discoverable :(
I can see the PC from the laptop but I cant see any files it just shows me a "Printers" folder then gives me the option to add a printer.

you need to share the drive, go to my computer and right click on your drive and hit properties, sharing, advanced sharing options, check share? or something like that, (sorry on linux right now) then hit permissions select everyone and hit full access.

sorry for the run on sentence.

please confirm both computers are on the same workgroup (google windows workgroup if you don't know how )

determine the host names and IP addresses of both computers and post here.

also post the share name

A WORKGROUP is a Windows-specific term, you want everybody who need to "talk" to each other in the same workgroup. Then W7, and am guessing W8 as well have this HOME GROUP, don't know about Vista, that also "gathers" everybody under the same tent for the purpose of sharing resources.

Try sharing folders instead of a whole drive, sometimes that works "faster." (as in simpler).

BTW NOTHING to do whether you are on ethernet or wireless, completely inconsequential.
