So a while back I called up Charter in order to get a second cable internet line in my house because I was tired of being on my brother's network (Kept constantly unplugging the router etc.)

Charter said they could charge me for a completely separate internet connection so I agreed...the guy came in and setup a new cable modem he mentioned that the speeds "shouldn't effect each other" eh?

Anyways a few months later something weird happened I noticed Charter hadn't been billing me for this separate line, one day the cable guy stops by and says "We have to fix something on your line it's causing others to lose connectivity" surely I thought they were going to disconnect my 2nd line. They did something, came and took the amplifiers out of our house but both lines still worked *shrugs*.

Anyways I moved downstairs, moved my 2nd cable modem down there with me and it worked fine So I decided to get a wireless router downstairs because the connectivity to my brothers upstairs (for the ps4 and my phone) was a bid dodgy, router was refurbished and had nothing but problems (even directly connected to it) I chalked it up to the router being defective, sent it back and decided I could do without it and just use my brothers wireless signal, well now I'm putting a second PC in my room so I need a router, it came to my thought that maybe the router had been somehow interfering with my brother's router upstairs because maybe I wasn't actually on my own separate connection?

Anyways just a thought....anyone have any ideas?

Solution
1. check to see if you have your own connection. Pretty easy. Just go to your pc and go to ipchicken.com. do the same on your brothers PC. If your numbers match you are both on the same connection.

2. When you setup the router you should....
a. Make sure you rename the router, especially if it's the same brand as your brothers.
b. Make sure you forget your brothers wifi info on all devices.
c. Check which channel your running on. Try changing it. If possible look at what your brothers running and try not to use the same channel.
