Hi all,

Had a little Xmas windfall and I was think about whether to get an Asus vg248qe 144hz monitor or upgrading from a GTX 960 FTW to a GTX 970 or r9 390. Wondering if anyone out there has had experience or has thoughts.

I'm a writer and do graphics and video work as well, so the TN panel of the Asus monitor is making me a little nervous. I have another 27" Asus IPS panel coming back to me via repair soon. I've not had experience with the higher level gpus.

Here's my current build:

CPU

Intel Core i3-6100 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor

Motherboard

Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3P ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

Memory

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

Storage

Sandisk SSD PLUS 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Video Card

EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB FTW ACX 2.0+ Video Card

Case

NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply

Corsair 850W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Thanks.

A 144hz monitor is going to give you a better refresh rate, refreshing 144 times a second essentially. Unless you are doing some type of special animating or 3Dmodeling / rigging you shouldn't really need a 144HZ monitor, you will definitely get more performance with a better GPU, if you are using the build for productivity you may even look at investing in a new CPU. Are you at least running a 60HZ monitor for now?

assuming youre not gaming, I think your best bet would be the monitor . if you are gaming, I think you'll be hard pressed to find games that will let a 960 run at 144hz with high settings.

but honestly, you may want to look into a better CPU instead. depending on your program, upgrading to a quad core may give you better performance games for your editing

I am gaming. The graphics work is a secondary concern on this machine. I should have been a a little more clear. Sorry.

What concerns me most about the 144hz is the text replication. I'm 44, a writer, wear bifocals, etc. I have a 2015 15" Macbook Pro i7 I use for work, but I'd like the PC to be good for that work as well, as much as possible.

I have the 144hz monitor at home now and have been using it for a few days. It's OK, but honestly I liked the experience of using a $100 HP monitor better for writing and web browsing. The 144hz is pretty washed out, even after calibration.

I mainly play BF4 and Skyrim, at this point. With the 960 I'm averaging ~60 fps in BF4. I was getting 144 out of Skyrim when I played last night.

I plan to upgrade the CPU eventually, but right now, the i3 is working surprisingly well, especially in game play.

I have

Cool. Honestly, the court will likely be the very next upgrade I make. I wanna get some use out of the i3 first so I can compare experiences.

I make YouTube videos and have a build log up for this machine. I will keep updating as I go along.

Which brings me back to the original question. Ideally I'd like this to be a 2-3 monitor setup. I can still return the 960 and the Asus monitor. (I'm a Best But return policy abuser.)

Just trying to figure out best bang for my current buck so I can settle in and use this rig for a while.

Thanks.
