As said earlier, GPU.

Tom's list for 1080 maxed games has the GTX 970, though I'd argue for the R9 390 since it's better in nearly every metric at just about the same price point. (The 390 would also get you good results if you upgraded the monitor to 1440p.)

* Note, I have a 390, but I try and not be biased towards AMD. However, in only very rare situations would I personally recommend a 970 over a 390.

** Another note: If you can wait till about mid-year the next leap in GPUs should be either coming out or would be shortly. Pascal from nVidia and Arctic Islands from AMD should be very interesting and compelling product lines.

Well as norseman said, a GTX 970 or a R9 390 would be a good card and you can pretty much max out any game at 1080p.
