Hi,

I have used this forum so much over the years and have found it so helpful. I have a problem of my own which I would like some help/advice with.

We have an office that has broadband with a router > switch > and around 20 connected devices.

We have another office which is around 150 meters away that has NO network. The simple plan is to extend the same network to this office.

I have thought about running underground fibre cabling (high cost!) and point to point air fibre (high cost!) but I am wondering if I am missing an easier solution.

I have found out recently that in the un-networked office there is a phone line (not configured) already in place.

If I got the phone company to assign this with the same number, could there be an easier solution to get network in the office?

I am really sorry for my bluntness, but my experience is limited here.

Thank you in advanced!

A phone line only allows you to buy a second DSL account, that's about it.

If both buildings don't cross public land, you can potentially tie the two together via 2 WIFI devices with directional antennas, of course performance won't be as nice as wired.

If an outdoor WIFI bridge is too high cost, then I don't know what would be the best answer. The outdoor hardware should be under $200 plus installation. You would still need a switch and cabling inside but that cost is the same no matter what option.

I appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately there is not a clear line of site. The point to point wireless sounds a great plan but it will not be an ideal solution in this scenario.

If the second phone point in the other office was connected using the same number, could I get another router? Would this mean two separate broadband contracts? Apologies for my lack on knowledge! I was then thinking once we had broadband connectivity, we could either port forward or use a VPN to connect networks together? But then again, would there be performance issues?

Thank you in advance

Probably two broadband contracts. You should check with a business specialist from your ISP. You would then use a VPN to connect the two offices securely.

Thank you for the reply! Very grateful with all the pointers. By using a VPN, would this bring any performance issues?
Our current download/upload are 25mb/5mb respectively.

Think I will call our ISP and see what can be done. Thank you!

A VPN will usually require dedicated hardware to get decent performance. SmallNetBuilder.com has had comparison articles on VPN endpoint routers. Anything up to about 40Mb is not too expensive. Above that performance level it gets expensive.

Since the building are close a unusual solution would be to run a private dsl. They key is if you can lease a pair of wires (Better 2 pair) from the phone company. You can then get device generally marketed as "ethernet extenders" that run a form of VDSL between them.

Of course if all else fails there is always getting a leased line from the phone company between the buildings....then again you can likely buy a fully managed solution from them that appears as a ethernet port on each end.

It will all come down to money, mobile broadband is going to be expensive if you use a lot of data.

As previously mentioned, check into getting a leased line from the telephone company. This will essentially create a direct line between your two buildings.

You can then use a pair of these (or similar) to network the buildings together.
