Hi there,

I’m a video editor looking to build a PC that can run the above programmes, handle workflows up to 4K, and that is strong in multitasking with encoding/transcoding etc. I’ve not built a PC before so I have spent the last few months doing some research in order to get a better grasp of things in order to hopefully not waste too much of your time!

My budget is around £7000-£8000 pounds and I’m hoping this can include a couple of monitors and also a fairly decent colour correction monitor. (I’ve heard good things about BenQ.)

My idea for the build thus far is:

Dual Intel Xeon E5 2697 v3
64gb (8x8) Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR4 ram
Nvidia Quadro K4200 (UI GPU)
Nvidia GeForce GTX TITAN X or GTX 980Ti
250GB Samsung 850 EVO, 2.5" SSD (Application Drive)
4 x 4TB WD Green HDD

Net Total £6137.71
Total (Inc VAT) £7365.25

So, my main questions are:

1. The majority of my work is 2K and 1080p DNxHD projects so would I get away
with just the one Xeon for the time being until I have more demand for the 4K work?

2. I read a post (Blackmagic forum, I think) that claimed the TITAN X only had a 3%
performance increase over the GTX 980Ti and so was not worth the extra cost. Does
anyone have any knowledge of this or can offer the best GPU set-up for the specifications?

3. I’m hoping to keep the storage self contained, for the most part, so would 4 x 4TB HDD in Raid
10 for speed and redundancy be suitable? I realise I’ll also be needing a raid controller for this so
can anyone suggest a decent one?

4. Any suggestions for a dual socket board that has built in sound card and wifi?

5. Finally, any suggestions for a case, an application drive, coolers and anything else I will need?

This is a bit of a long winded post so I appreciate any help that you can offer.

Many thanks! :)

It might be, this is one of those cases you might have to do a bit more research, on your own. Maybe there is a forum dedicated to your software. You still have enough in the budget, to add another graphics card, if needed.

Any particular reason you were looking at quadro and GTX cards? Other than that uncertainty, with that budget, something like this may work, for you. You would have more cores/threads, for less cost than that 2697v3.

40 threads will never be used by any program. for his build a pair of E5-2667 or 2697's will work better. i would also get a different mobo. that particular one is very expensive a nice supermicro one would be better

Hi, thanks for your response. I had chosen the 2697s and the Quadro & Titan based off the Blackmagic recommendations for running Davinci 12. Will a single K5200 be sufficient to power the UI and perform the image processing then?

Ok, great. I assumed the configuration guide was referencing the UI of the programme (Davinci Resolve). I'll have to do a bit more research relating to this. Thanks!

Yes, I've posted in the Blackmagic forum as well. Thanks for your help!
