Windows 10 is Asking Me to "Initialize" My Second SSD. What to Do?

Help Needed “Initializing” SSD

I just built a computer having an SSD connected to motherboard connector “SATA 0”. It is the “C” drive in Windows 10. There is a CD/DVD drive on motherboard “SATA 2”; it is currently Windows drive “D”. I left motherboard connector “SATA 1” open for a second SSD.

I initially installed only the one SSD, loaded Windows 10, etc. Things appeared ok. I then installed the second SSD on motherboard “SATA 1”.

The BIOS recognizes the second SSD. Windows 10 Device Manager recognizes the second SSD. However, Windows 10 System Devices (i.e., the tree of devices) does not recognize the second SSD.

After some time, I went to the storage device manager dialog. The first SSD (Device 0) is fine, and the CD/DVD is fine. The second SSD, labeled as Device 1, states, IN RED LETTERS, “Unknown, Not Initialized”. Ok, so that appears to be the problem (though I do not know what “Initialize” means). When I click on that drive, a dialog appears asking me to initialize Device 1, and gives me two “Partition Style” options to choose from: “MBR” and “GPT”.

I have build machines in the past and have never been presented with this issue; perhaps it has to do with my never-before use of SSDs. But I was not presented with this issue with respect to the first SSD installed on this machine (Drive “C”).

Should I “initialize” this SSD (I suppose so)? Should I select “MBR” or “GPT”?

When this is done, I hope the SSDs will be Drive C and D, and the CD/DVD labeled as Drive E.

Thank you for any explanation and advice.

Solution
That "System Reserved" is your boot information. Created by the OS install.
Required to be there, and only exists on the boot drive.

Leave it be.

Thank you USAF Ret.

I disconnected the CD/DVD drive then initialized the second SSD (Device 1) as something called a “Simple Volume”, to be designated in Windows 10 as Drive D. All seems ok.

I have one followup question.

When I installed the first SSD earlier today, according to the Windows 10 Disk Management Dialog (which is very similar to that in Windows 7 and XP), my first SSD, labeled as “Disk 0” (Windows Drive C) is divided into “System Reserved: 500 MB” and “C: 232.4 GB”.

The just-installed and initialized SSD, labeled Device 1 (Windows Drive D), is, as noted above, a “Simple Volume” at the full capacity of 232.76 GB.

Is it OK or expected that the first-installed SSD has a “System Reserved” of 500 MB? Is that similar to a separate partition, except created upon initial install, not by me specifically?

Thank you for your assistance.

Reminds me of the "Beatles" song: "Let it Be, Let it Be".

I shall, and thank you very much.
