How can I make the HDD the primary drive?

I'm having problems with figuring out my SSD and HDD and I can't find the answers I'm looking for anywhere. I just build my first PC and I'm trying to use the SSD as the boot drive and the HDD for everything else. When I try to install files they keep going to the SSD. Is there a way I can set my HDD to be the primary drive? If so how can I do that (I've tried looking at the BIOS menu and Computer Management but I don't know what I'm doing and I don't want to screw anything up). I tried changing the file locations so they'd go into the HDD but that didn't work. Nothing showed up in it, just on the SSD. Also, I'm running Windows 8.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. But now when I try to create a folder on the hard drive it shows up on my desktop, not as a shortcut but as an actual file.

Describe the exact series of steps you take to do this.
