My final attempt. I took the entire thing out of my case to check for shortages. I placed my setup on my test bench with no contact to the case and hard drive unplugged. I turned it on, it goes to the windows install menu and it freezes yet again. So it is either my PSU or my mobo I'm guessing at this point. Can someone help me finalize this? I'm starting to lean toward the mobo as the problem, I get into the bios fine, but it freezes really badly when I plug in my USB DVD drive. The PSU seems to be supplying power fine as all my 5 fans are spinning great and the 2 CPU fans. The ram reads fine in the bios as well. The display looks fine, so I doubt it's my r9 290 that would cause freezing/stalls. I know the CPU is ok since I wouldn't be getting any where without it working properly. I just don't understand why it all seemed to install fine the first time then got hung up at completing installatio and then a hard reset with the power button screwed everything up.

There is no way it is the fault of the PSU. The 'DRIVER_IRQL' error tells us nothing, but the 'a clock interrupt was not recieved' error tells us that it was the fault of your motherboard or CPU. And unless your PC crashes on BIOS, it is most likely the cause of your motherboard. I'll try come up with a way to test which part is at fault, but I wouldn't RMA anything until we're sure.

Yes that is what I was thinking. I get into bios fine every time. It just freezes hard for like 2-5 seconds when I plug my optical dvd drive in. And I don't think it is the CPU. I have a Noctua cooler on it and the temps are staying at 35 C max idle. I did the paste correctly too. A nice blob in the middle, not too much, so that it spreads out even. I really think it is the mother board oddly enough too at this point, because everything seems to be getting power fine. It just locks up during windows install now which it originally did not do. I was talking to a tech support guy on ASUS and he seemed to think it was a driver error causing the freeze.

I tried the CMOS moving from jumpers 1-2 to 2-3 for 10 seconds and then moved it back to 1-2. I saw no difference unless I did this wrong. Still freezes at windows install. I did not try removing the battery or flashing bios up to 2500 range from it being around 2300. It wouldn't read my usb flash drive, so maybe I should try another? The guy at ASUS also suggested trying to install a different operating system but I thought that was a long shot considering that windows 7 32/64 bit and my windows 8.1 DVD's all freeze at the start menu's. I think that is enough OS's to try to solve that problem. I don't want XP on there even if it works and I don't want something like ubuntu on there... Please no! So, let me know if you have any more information for me thanks!

Hmm. You have tried different ports for the DVD drive right? I remember once I had a windows install that was extremely corrupted due to a faulty USB port. If you have tried that and you have another computer handy, try use a USB thumb drive to install windows. If that doesn't work, I think it is your mobo.

And just to clarify what happened originally. I plug the DVD optical into the system with everything secure inside the case. It read my windows 7 64 bit DVD fine and it went through all the installs. I will say it seemed like it sat at 0% much longer than I expected and I literally went away for like maybe 5-10 minutes and I come back it is already at "completing installation." I was like great, the hardware probably just made the install quicker! But after it sat at "completing installation" for around 40-50 more minutes that is when I held the power button in until restart. Then it went to the windows splash screen with and without the DVD in and froze every time there or at starting services. That is when I reformatted my hard drive on my other computer, but that wasn't the issue anyways. This is also when it started to freeze and even pretty much lock up at the BIOS splash screen (not actually in bios) every time I plugged my USB DVD drive in. Because without the HDD connected it still started freezing every time at the beginning of all the OS installs I mentioned above or plugging in the DVD Drive. The only way I can get it to read the USB DVD drive is to plug it in when I'm in bios and then restart and hopefully it reads in bios next start up and then I F10-escape save changes. Hopefully the next time it starts it reads the DVD drive as it is the first priority on the boot menu. I have the DVD drive working now, so I haven't messed with which USB port it is plugged into just in case I am able to get through install some how lol.

I've tried literally all of them. The red ports, usb3.0 blue and the front panel ports all go to a blinking _ and stay there. The only ports that work at the back are 6 usb 2.0 ports (which includes the 2 flash back/bios ports). But all of those froze at the install menu's. I was originally trying all the different ports when it wasn't reading the drive, but then realized I just need to plug and unplug it into the ports mentioned on the back until it finds it.

And also that would've been fixed when I plugged in the internal optical dvd drive I mentioned above. It is literally 10 x faster than the USB one and that is the only time I got the two blue screens mentioned above. It only freezes/restarts with the USB one.

OK, then as a last resort you could just re-download the windows boot media...But I would still try a USB drive. I agree it should've been fixed when you plugged in the internal reader, but USB drives are WAY more reliable anyways. So there is really no harm in doing it.

What do you mean by "windows boot media?" Do you mean the bios update or something else? Or are you saying I should try to create a windows installation on a flash drive instead of the USB DVD drive I have? Because I never had a USB flash drive with a windows install on it. I've only been using an external optical DVD drive and the internal. I could grab an 8gb flash drive though.

The boot media is the stuff that would be on your DVD to install windows, and yes I do mean make a windows installation on a flash drive instead of your DVD one. 8GB will do fine, but if it's gonna cost you an uncomfortable amount just don't buy one.

I just wanted to say that this guy was right from the beginning. I ended up sending the mobo in for RMA since it was under warranty. They found no errors, surprise surprise. I get it back and you won't believe this part. I accidentally didn't plug one of the RAM sticks in properly, so the windows install went through and everything was fine. I then noticed that under my windows properties that I only had 4 gigs showing up (1 stick of my RAM). I then properly plug both sticks in and BAM, FREEZING and BLACK SCREENS again. I then use the 1 stick I was sure was working. Went into windows fine. I plug the other stick of ram into the same slot the previous one was in. Freezing again. So after all this nonsense, it was just a bad stick of RAM.... They were brand new too and had never used, but I guess DOA's do happen. Just wanted to clear this up in case anyone else runs into the same problems.
