Does it really make a change when it comes to ethernet speed if i add a dual band router?

I have uverse and im planning to hook up a router to maybe boost the speed and the range -- will it work?

Dual band router means it will put off two wifi signals at ones. One 2.4ghz one 5ghz. When you have alot of devices connected to the router having dual band helps alot by minimizing traffic bottlenecks basically(trying to use easy terms). The range of the router is based on the model you get, the more you pay the better range and bandwidth you get. I would start by checking what your rated speed is by your isp that you purchased and comparing it to a speedtest( www.speedtest.net ) If you're getting youre qouted download and upload speed your issue is elsewhere.

Dual band just supports both the 2.4 & 5Ghz ranges. Many crowded environments have very little space left in the 2.4Ghz band. That will have a big impact on performance and in that case moving to a (usually) less crowded 5Ghz band will make things much better. The newer wireless AC is also 5Ghz only, and does have longer range and better throughput than wireless N, so if both your router and your device support Wireless AC, then you can expect better performance.

5Ghz wireless N though isn't necessarily any faster and will actually be lower range as the higher 5Ghz frequency is more affected by walls and the like.

What's your current setup and is it not fast enough?
