EVGA NVidia GTX 970 GPU crashes only when playing video games

I've been having this problem well... basically since I put this GPU in my computer, but the crashes would rarely happen until just a couple of months ago. I've had this graphics card for about a year now. Initially it'd happen maybe once every couple of months. in September it began happening a couple of times a month, then eventually it happens once or twice a week. Now it happens frequently.

The GPU crashes only occur when I play video games. I also stream on Twitch frequently (well used to, took a break because my crashes were so frequent) and originally I thought Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) was causing the crashes. Lately I've confirmed OBS is not the root cause, as my GPU will crash whether I'm streaming or not. OBS will make it worse by freezing my computer if a GPU crash occurs, but my GPU can still crash when playing my Video Games, however, it will recover and give me the "Your Graphics failed and has recovered" message, with the game for the most part unaffected.

My GPU will more likely crash on more demanding Video Games, but just recently it has been crashing on low resource intensive games like Octodad: Dadliest Catch. What will always happen is that when it crashes is that the screen will go to a singular color, typically brown, then it goes to my desktop, gives me the GPU failure message, and the game will be fine (Unless I'm streaming, then the computer freezes). It's not always consistent as to when my games cause GPU crashes. Sometimes it'll take an hour or so, other times it'll be within 10-30 minutes of gameplay time.

I've taken a bunch of steps to try and fix the problem with no improvement. I've reinstalled the driver, physically replaced the card back into its slot, I've replaced my PSU (was 700 Watt now an 850 Watt), I dust my computer once a month on average. I checked to see if there were any blown or bent capacitors in case it was a Motherboard failure and everything works fine.

I haven't ran a GPU stress test yet but I plan too. I did monitor my GPU with GPU-Z and saw no irregularity. Doesn't typically get hotter than 75 degrees C when playing video games for about 40 minutes when I tested it once without streaming. Right now with only some Chrome tabs open it's at 44 degrees C.

I've heard several things that COULD be the issue:

1. My GPU is faulty or dying and the crashes are a sign. I have made my computer run hot in the past, and sometimes my Games' FPS will drop drastically when it gets really hot. I either remedy this by taking a break and/or cooling the room down, typically with a table fan blowing air into the computer (This actually does help keep my computer significantly cool).

2. My CPU processor is an AMD FX-8150, which could be conflicting in some manner with the GPU. I've heard NVidia Cards may not get along well working with AMD CPUs. Not sure how true that is though.

3. My Motherboard is dying. I find this unlikely, but still possible. I haven't had any other issues aside from GPU crashes, however. I looked inside and saw no blown or bent capacitors or anything out of the ordinary.

If anyone can find something I haven't I would love to hear it. As I'm starting to exhaust the solutions I've been finding.

Update 12/26/15: It took a few days with roughly 2 hour sessions of each day but I still managed to get a GPU crash while playing the Witcher just now. I can confirm this is not due to overheating as well, as my GPU playing that game never goes about 60 degrees C. So I think the registry scan improved my situation but didn't alleviate the problem. :/

If there are any other suggestions I would love to hear them. treyhlb suggested cleaning out %appdata% but is there anything specific I should "clean out"? Because I'd rather not mess with it then having something no longer work right that was important.

Update: 12/27/15:
So... the GPU crashed twice while playing the Witcher within 15 minutes just now. I not only did another registry scan but I also used the "cleaner" option in Ccleaner. Noticed it caught some NVidia install files.

I don't have high hopes that this is what the cause was but again I still don't know why this is happening. I ran GPU-Z while playing again and it shows no abnormalities with the GPU when the crashes happen.

Update 12/28/15:
So The Witcher has CONTINUED to have GPU crashes. And now they're frequent. I'll get a few within an hour of playing. I actually thought at one point that it was my 2nd monitor causing the issue but since disabling it the GPU crashes STILL occur. This is getting to be really frustrating. Scratch that, it was frustrating, now it's a major headache. I'm now considering getting a new graphics card and I still have a fear that it isn't a hardware issue.

Maybe I should note, before I got the GTX 970 I did Crossfire with 2 AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series Graphics cards. In the years I had them in this computer, I could only ever remember a GPU crash maybe once or twice in total.

Update 12/30/15:
So I finally managed to get the motherboard BIOS update properly completed. Before I managed this, I tried playing Resident Evil: Revelations 2 and my 2nd monitor went black, with the main monitor flickering, which also happened on the Witcher prior before a GPU crash occured. After the BIOS update, I played the witcher again and the 2nd monitor went black again (should mention I only play my video games on one monitor, the other is typically for everything else I need). My main monitor starts flickering and when I try to exit the game the computer freezes. I know this because I can see the mouse cursor and it doesn't move when I move my mouse.

This is now leading me to believe it's either my Motherboard or my Graphics Card that's having a hardware issue. Possible that one of them is faulty or might be dying.

Still going with my plan of sending it to a computer repair place. It's beyond my experience at this point with computers and I've exhausted every solution I could find.

Update: 1/19/16:

So I got my computer back from the repair place. They replaced my HDD because it was beginning to die and showing bad sectors. They did report that they couldn't determine if the GPU was having issues but that my Motherboard was just fine. The HDD replacement DID NOT fix my GPU crashes. Witcher crashed within 10 minutes of me playing it. I am no longer getting screen flickering, however. I did check and my BIOS update was not retained, so I'm going to update that again.

If this doesn't work, I don't see any other option than to replace the GPU. This is probably the most frustrating problem I've ever had to deal with as far as electronics are concerned. After all the time and money I spent trying to fix this thing, I keep thinking to myself that it would have been better if I just built a new computer. :/

Here's my DxDiag, I'll put it in a spoiler tag so that you can expand it and it won't make this post incredibly long:

I have my settings set to where Skype won't load at startup, so I don't have it running unless I want it to. My GPU is not overclocked. Wasn't sold that way and I never OC'd it myself.

Ccleaner has helped me with alot of my problems in the registry plus you need to scan about 5 times it does not take to long but It will fix all the registry problems for free.

so... I'm NOT sure if scanning the registry with Ccleaner worked? I played Octodad again after the scan (did find a lot of stuff and cleaned it up) but within 5 minutes the screen went black (not brown this time) for about a second or 2. The game didn't crash and there was no "Your Graphics card failed and has recovered" message this time. Test was about a half hour. I'm gonna try other more demanding games and/or maybe a stress test to see if the problem really was fixed.

So you weren't wrong in that scanning the registry with Ccleaner actually cleaned up a bunch of stuff but inconclusive if my problem with the GPU crashes is solved until I test it more. Will update when I do of course.

So it's looking good. I've been playing the Witcher for a few hours straight with no GPU crash. I'm gonna give it a week and testing it further through streaming before I'm confident this was the problem. Will keep this updated. Thank you treyhlb for suggesting it.

It took a few days with roughly 2 hour sessions of each day but I still managed to get a GPU crash while playing the Witcher just now.

So... the GPU crashed twice while playing the Witcher within 15 minutes just now.

Games that didn't used to experience GPU crashes are now having them frequently. Trying to update the BIOS on my Motherboard to see if that could fix it. Had to pay 30 dollars for the software (not happy) and they sent me a broken link for the download (really not happy) and then they send me a 32-bit version when I need a 64-bit version of the software (REALLY not happy), otherwise the program won't start.

I'm going to send it to a computer repair place. I think I exhausted all my options at this point.

And Update.

I'm having kind a same problems but I managed to find out that if I set the GPU fan to spin 50% speed it wont crash anymore.

I've used openhardwaremonitor to speed up the GPU fan but I think you can use any other program to do the same.
