Consequences to providing too much amperage to case fan

Good Evening,

I'm sick of buying routers every year or two and would like to just make them last longer. Did some reading and found that one of the major causes of failure is heat stress or overheating.

So, I just bought a new router and want to pop off at least one side panel and rig up a case fan to blow over the board. My question is, I have a ton of 1 Amp power supplies left over from old routers. I can see that most case fans require much less than an Amp of power. Will powering them with these 1 amp power supplies cause damage to the fans? If so, how would I go about reducing the Amperage? Would I add resistors because I= VxR? Thanks for any help. My gut tells me that too much amperage would cause a failure in the case fans sooner rather than later, but I'm no electronics genius.

Thanks,
Mike

DC motors will only pull as much current as they need. You will not give them too much. For cooling other projects (reef aquarium comes to mind) I used to hook up case fans to old cell phone chargers or power supplies for other electronics and often give them over 500ma. The voltage will control the speed though. 12v should be max speed, 6v would be 50% speed, etc.

Thanks guys. Kanewolf, you've got a good point. I might be overcomplicating the issue. Timeconsumer, many thanks for the answer to the question I asked.
