So I've finally built my PC and I ended up having my GPU not support VGA so I needed a DVI cable instead. In the mean time I tried to connect my PC to my TV via hdmi cable and nothing ended up coming up on the screen. Not sure if I messed up on my PC because everything looked like it was working fine except my GPU which had only the Sapphire's symbol light on and the fans where not spinning (not sure if that's a problem). I checked a similar question, but the poster never said how he fixed it. Someone had suggested that the ram might have been installed onto the wrong slot (I have 1 8gb stick) which I installed under the cpu cooler since I wanted to use it up before I put the cpu cooler on since it blocked the one slot closest to the cpu.

Specs:
gpu: R9 280x Toxic
cpu: Fx 8320
Cpu cooler: Hyper T4 (Something like that)
Ram: 1x 8gb ddr3 hyperx fury
Mother Board: MSI 970 gaming
Case: HAF 922
PSU: Corsair cx 600w

Solution

Got the computer to work perfectly on my tv by switching the 8gb stick from DIMM 1 to DIMM 3 (and using the hdmi cable) ! But no hope on getting it to work on my monitor. It's still not recognizing the vga nor the dvi. I'm using the vgi to dvi converter by the way. The converter may have just been faulty so I'll go exchange it today and hopefully it works. Atleast now I know it's not my computer.

EDIT: Looks like I grabbed the dual link dvi-d adapter when I needed a single link dvi-d or dual link dvi-i

Assuming that all is working correctly - you should also need to switch to the HDMI port on your television to pick up the signal from the PC (just look at the back and figure out which one.) I have a 46" 'Monitor' setup like this - it also gets cable.

It sounds, though, that you assembled your PC and are not certain that it is working as intended - so there may be other components not quite working. be sure that your Video card is fully inserted and powered with the 6-pin plugs - in reading your text - the fans should spin during POST, but may stop during normal operation if the temps are not high.

You could wait for your DVI cable to show up - but you will likely still have some issues that need to be resolved. My suggestion is to remove all the components you DO NOT NEED - Disconnect hard drives, remove all memory, keep the CPU, MB and Video Card (if you still need to connect to the TV) and check the connections to everything.

TEST....At this stage you should get something on the screen a beep - something - but it will not boot or post properly without a hard drive or memory.

Assuming you got a positive reaction begin adding memory - test - hard drive - test - ect....test. You are essentially trying to verify that each component is addressed during boot up - and in the process isolating any issues. For example - if it was working fine and you added another stick of memory and it fails - there is a good chance that what you changed is where the issue is.

Good luck.

would it be fine if I kept the ram since i'd have to remove the cpu cooler first in order to get to my ram and the cpu cooler is a pain to put in (at least for me).

Yea checked every step and seemed that I did it fine. Although the ram part I installed the 1 8gb stick that I had closest to my cpu. It's a amd board though.

Not sure about card's fans. Check the specs. It might be that they start only under load.
As for signal, I suggest testing with a monitor (try borrowing one).

GPU fans are working right now (last time I tested the pc was last night so I must have thought that they weren't running). I guess it mus be my tv at fault since the pc seems to be looking fine when I turn it on.
